“WET OR FINE”
RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION. WORKERS DISSATISFIED. Everything went along swimmingly with the railway construction workers at Stillwater while the weather was fine, but when the weather broke all went awry. Yesterday morning when the workmen arrived at Stillwater it is stated that they were informed by the gangers that unless they worked in the rain they would receive no pay. Owing to the longspell of fine weather, yesterday was the first occasion on which the matter was brought up, and as a protest against such ruling about twenty-five men returned to Greymouth. The rate of pay is 12s per day, and it was understood by the men that this would be forthcoming in both wet ,and fine weather. Considering that the 12s shows but an increase of 2s on pre-war rates this is notat all surprising. A - deputation waited upon the inspector yester- . day aftemoon, and it is understood an agreeable arrangement was arrived at for the time being. The men thereupon resumed work; Mr J. K. Lowe, District Engineer, who is at present out of town, will communicate with the head of the Department, and has proceeded to Stillwater to investigate the grievance put for- “ ward- by the mep. ,
