The Board met at Reef ton last evening'at ,'/.aU o'clock, Mr. 'Smith iii the chair. •_ Application' for a school "at" Mawheraiii.Tho Board visited the site and considered the application a necessary one, principally on account of the long distance the scholars' have to travel. The settlers ofiered d site also the piles for the building and would do other work. It was therefore decided to ask the Board's architect to a-mend his estimate, and renew the application, to the Department. Application irom, the Reef ton School Committee for better ventilation to the school was granted, also repairing and painting lavatories. It was also decided to remove the fence irom between tiie school and the teacher's residence, to repair lire places and grates, also to paint the room occupied by Standards 2 and 3. The cupboard to be repaired, and desk in the big room replaced by a table. Other recommendations adopted were for a new coalshed, a new door for standard "V. room, extension of porch for the headmaster's oihce; alteration of hyloplate, blinds for all windows facing north ; also replacing • the baseboards by rusticating and putting boards in position to keep birds out of eaves, jfc was also resolved that the committee obtain an estimate for renewal of fence in Lucas Street, and also for a shelter shed. The Chairman said that the site for a. new school was an important one. They had sections under offer and an application should be made to the Department to secure a. grant for the purpose of erecting a school. Mr. Scantlebury moved that the owners of the property bo asked to give the committee an option over the property for six months. Seconded by Mr. Bovce and carried. It was also decided to,author:sc too Committee to have the water attached to the technical school grounds. The Chairman of the .Reefton School Committee thanked the Board for tne consideration gi%-en the Reefton committee, which Air. Scantlebury endorsed. The organising teacher reported on the condition of the Waitahu school. There was no fence in..front., with the result that cattle and sheep trespassed on the school grounds. A sink was also required to carry away the water from the tank.—The matter was referred to Uv. Scantlebury to report. The reports of the Finance, Technical and Building Committee were adopted. The Senior Inspector's report was submitted. This stated that of £6O pupils presented, 335 obtained proficiency certificates, 112 competency, and 36 endorsed competency certificates. rROFICIEXCY.
The latter included seven from oilier schools. Recfton's actual result was 65 per cent. The recommendations of the Senior Inspector re pupil teachers and probationers were accepted. APPLICATIONS. The application of Ml* H. Holdaway for the Nelson Boys' School -was recommended. * The position rendered vacant is to he offered to Mr V. Satherley. No eligible applications having been received for the position of secondary assistant at Westport, it was decided that Mr Tooley be appointed for two months. Miss Toi'ley was recommended as second assistant at Millerton; Nordoff, assistant,. Miss K. Parkes; Waimangaroa, assistant, Miss McNamara ; Brooklyn assistant. Miss D. Cropp; Granity assistant, Miss Craddock; Westport assistant, Miss Levestam; Mapna, sole teacher, Miss Woods; Katanga, Mr Watson; Kiwi, Miss Fxicrel; Wairoa Gorge, Mrs Hall. Miss Gibbs, of Cronadnn, was transferred to Newdorf. The report on the Globe and Progress schools suggested that one school could be closed, and suggested that Mr Ellery be transferred to Cronadnn. It was decided to close the Globe school. The action of. the Secretary in withholding the salary of a teacher who had not returned to her duties was confirmed.
The Tanekaka School was reduced to a household school, and the teacher was to be transferred. It was decided to transfer Mr Ellery temporarily to Cronadun from Globe.

A vote of sympathy was.passed to the widow and,family of, Mr L. F. Gubb (Nelson Boys) and to Mr Brown- (Westport) in the bereave-, mejnt in.,his family. The Board decided to assist Mr Willrinsoii in the matter, of send- * ing his son, who had secured a scholarship, to Nelson College. The Board then adjourned." :,
