_ . — o*. RACING FIXTURES. February 26,. 28—Wanganui J.C. February 28 and March 2—To Aroha J.C. Annual. March 4, 6—Nelson J.C. Annual. March 5, 6—Napier Park R.C. March 6 —Akaroa County Annual. March 6, B—Thames8 —Thames J.C. March 10, 11—Marlborough R.C. WANGANUI RACES ANTICIPATIONS FOR TO-MORROW (By "Arlington.") The Wanganui Jockey Club's aut,umn Meeting,'will' be .commenced tomorrow, and concluded on Saturday. ■ Borealis, the consistent, would appear to possess a great chance of winning the Stewards' Handicap, in lact

it is hard to see what has a possible chance of beating him. Of the others, Active may have the best prospects or paying the second dividend. A big field of useful hacks, are down, to compete in the Petre Hack Handicap, but the Autumnus—Nicotine three-year-old .filly Kinsem is generally regarded as being in a class a little out of the ordinary run of hacks.' With this the case, I would expect to find her hard to beat with the lightimpost of 7.3. Explorer would appear to overshadow the remainder of the field in the West-

mere Hurdles, and Mr. Kemball's recent Australian purchase will no doubt go out a good favourite. Ratana with the light impost of 9.7 should also run well. ' Principal interest will centre round the running of the "Wanganui Cup, which carries a stake of 1150 sovs., >)gether with a silver cup valued at £IOO, presented by W. R. Grace, Esq. Kilmoon is now at the top of the handicap, and if he is at his best I do not think Bst. 31b. will stop him. The son of Kilbroney has been very consistent in his last few starts, and it will be remembered dead-heated in the Wellington Cup with Oratress, but at a difference of only lib. and with an extra quarter of a mile to go he should now hold the mare safe. Client, wiio has already won this race on the two occasions previous to last year, 1 do not give any chance. Taiamai won the Egmont Cup like the good one that the daughter of The Nut and Lady Molly undoubtedly is, and put up another good performance in the Atkinson Memorial on the second day by whining and establishing a record of 2.7 for the race. She certainly possesses a great chance to-morrow, and will most likely go out favourite. Kilrush would appear to possess a chance on his November running at Riccartcn, but, unless his owner has had him specially set for this race since, I can't see him winning. Mascot, Ca/.ique and Snub appear a trio that can be passed over, while the latter has been sore during the last few

days. Dusky Eve won last year, and is nicely treated again to-morrow with 7.10, but on this season's form he can hardly be expected to repeat last year's performance. Punka is another thai has not been running up to early anticipation of late, but Melee is the pick of those under Bst. Being by Martian lie should stay out the full distance, a fact wliich he demonstrated last month when he won the Hamilton Cup in a \ery impressive manner. Rose Wreath and Lovematch have both incurred penalties, and of the pair I would prefer the latter. To sum up the situation Melee should be very hard to beat at the weigiits, with Taiamai and Kilmoon about equal chances. I would not go past Demand in looking for the winner of the Juvenile'

Handicap, though Weldone will possibly start favourite. The Flying Handicap, the second leg of the double, looks fairly open. Silver Link, last year's winner, will unci 9.1 a "'settler" over six furlongs, though the daughter of Achilles ,rui set such a hot pace over the first halfmile that it will require a good horse to win. Bo Peep is placed in prac tically every important race in which she starts without winning, and I have an idea that she might do better to-

morrow. Bon Spec ! What about him? is just what everybody wants to know ami does'nt know. We all k.vu-.v what a boom he was in connection with Gay Lacl for the Stewards' Handicap and New Zealand Cup. He has not been mentioned in public for the above race, which after all may be the best fuide as to his prospects for to-morrow. lie would hardly be travelled all the way from Riccartori to Wanganui if lie was not ready to race. Acre is well treated, and if an outsider scores he may be the one to upset anticipations. „ Tame. Fox, Simon and Starland are a trio that should be prominent in the

minor events. ANTICIPATIONS FOR. THE COURSE (Special to Star.) WANGANUI, This Day. The weather promises to be fine ror to-morrow's races, and already the town is full of visitors.

Taiamai is' a big favourite for the Cup, due in the first place to her two easy wins at Egmont, and in the second to the fine track work she has been responsible for during the last few days. Kilrush is slightly better fancied than Oratress, while Kilmoon has receded in the market somewhat since Saturday. Punka and Melee have a number of friends. Whatever wins, Taiamai looks a certainty to be

in the money. Inah has come into considerable prominence for the Flying Handicap during the last twenty-four hours, and will go out one of the first three favourites. Silver Link is not looking quite at her best, but Acre is .in great buckle and must be one of the hardest to beat, in fact whatever beats the Linacre horse will win. Borealis, Explorer, and Demand read well in their respective races.

IHIS MORNING'S TRACK WORK. (Per Press Association.) WANGANUI, This Day. The weather . was fine for the lmal gallops this morning. Lovematch got to the end of a mile in 1.45. Taiamai, the Cup favourite, reeled off a fast mile. Punka and Rose'Wreath finished on terms at the end of a mile, run in 1.45. Kilrush covered the last six furlongs

of a mile in 1.20: Oratress and Client finished together over a mile gallop, registered in 1.44. Tame Fox took 1.8 4-5 for five furlongs. War Baby beat Ermine over half a mile in 50secs. Demand and Isabel finished four furlongs in SOsecs., which time was equalled by Chimera and Little River. Useful work was done by Melee, Gazique, Mascot, Dusky Eve and Bag-

dad. NELSON TROTTING CLUB. THE ACCEPTANCES. (Per Press Association.) NELSON, This Day. R. Kemball has purchased the Boniform mare Bonnetter from Mr. G. L. Stead, and she is now training with the rest of Mr. Kemball's string, Zela has been leased by a Nelson sport, and will be raced at that meeting next month, and will afterwards do the W : est Coast meetings at Easter. Zela is a five-year-old gelding by Patronus from Zaida, and has shown fair on the training track at Wanganui. Out of £2315 invested on the Kume-

roa Hack Handicap at Woodville there was only one ticket on Student (Harrow —Catchfly), who finished just behind the placed horses. He is a half-brother to Golden Bubble. At a meeting of Westnovt. last week it was resolved to enter an emphatic protest against any total Wtor permit being given to any racing club in honour of the visit of the Prince of Wales until the day taken from the Westport Jockey Club for the Jellicoe Trotting Meeting at Christchurch is restored. The meeting also expressed indignation at the attitude i ' 1... J.l, _ T\. 1 J- „J' 1.,J.^..

taken up by the Department of Internal Affairs, wliich is apparently treating the contract entered into by the Racing Conference and the Westport Jockey Club as "a scrap, of paper." A TEMPTING OFFER REFUSED

FOR POITREL. SYDNEY, February Vo. The owners of Poitrel have refused an offer of £6OOO made for that horse by a Bombay sportsman. <» Poitrel is a five-year-old chestnut horse by St. Alwyne —Poinard, ami was bred and is still owned by Messrs W. and F. A. Moses. He is regarded as probably the best horse in Australasia. Last season he won four races,

including the Spring Stakes at Bandwick, when lie beat "Desert Cold over a mile and a halt in 2.31, and the A. J.C. Plate, of 1494 sovs., three miles. At the Australian J.C's Spring Meeting in October last he easily beat Kennaquhair and Sasanof over two miles in the Raudwick Plate, and he also got the decision from Gloaming and Cetigne in the Spring Stakes, of 1-g miles.
