SWIMMING.

WEEK-EXD RACES. SOME FIXE CONTESTS. Yesterday the Cobden Baths presented quite an animated appearance, when the weekly races, arranged by the Greymouth Swimming' Club, were got oh'. These races are causing quite a lot of excitement both among the. spectators and the swimmers themselves, and much credit is due to Mr E. McDonnell for the maimer in which he has handicapped for the races, which resulted in some close finishes. The various events are proving most popular as the season advances. For the first time during the present season a diving event was held and very creditable performances were given. In all events a very keen interest Avas taken. Boys' Handicap, 90 yards.—J. King (9sec) 1, Brown (ITsec) and J. Quinn (Bsec), a. dead heat,, 2. Also started: Sweetman scr, Gordon 2sec, W. Sexton 8, P. Sexton 9, P: Doogan 12, Bellamy 14, "WMorrisev, E. Quinn 17, _S T . Kiely 19, Fairhall 20, J. Morrisey, J. Sexton 22. The winner put up a very good performance for a hoy. He used the breast stroke all the way, and taking an outside position won hy three yards from Brown and J. Quinn, who were a dead heat for second place. Time 1.2-3. Men's 220 Yards Handicap.—B. Quinn (osec) 1, W. Deere (scr) 2, E. Xing (22sec) 8. Also started: L. Chapman ssec, Wearae 0, Trowland C, E. Robinson J2, P. Bryden 16, Parkinson 16, Love 26. Swimming on the hand side King held the lead at the half-, distance, where Quinn and Wearue were level in mid-stream. Deere gradually drew level with. King, but iu the last few yards was beaten- for first, place by Quinn. Time 8.2. Diving (standing and —Parkinson 1, Bryden 2. Wearae, Doogan, Chapman, McDonnell and King also competed. Doogan would have proved thewinner, but he did not take into consideration that points were given for rising. The winner gave a clean exhibition of diving.
