N.Z. JUDGES
AND THEIR SALARIES. (Per Press Association.^ AUCKLAND, This Day. Several matters affecting Supreme Court Judges were mentioned at the annual .meeting of the Auckland Law Society recently. The new president (Mr A. P. Richmond) said it might he ixrssihle for the society to consider the position of the most eminent members of the legal profession, the Supreme Court Judges, though possibly they Tl’t consider it an impertinence for the society to do so. He felt, however, that the tim chad come when the Judges should he put in. a better position. Their salaries were very much less than those of Australian Judges, and thenduties were much more onerous. They were not so well paid as high officials in the Railway Department, o}-, as, say, insurance company managers. There had been no increase in their salaries to meet the advanced cost of living, and it was not rigid to expect men of the stamp of judges to carry on for salaries which Were not commensurate with the duties they had to perform. Another factor was the congestion of work at Ihe Auckland Supreme Court. The time had come for appointment of a Judge who would he entirely resident in Auckland, an who would not he called upon to go on "circuit work to Hamilton and elsewhere. There, was some general discussion of Ihe question of Supremo Court fixtures, and the need for an. improvement in the methods of setting eases down for hearing.
