For Children’s Hacking Cough, Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. — Advt. One of the “D” type of locomotives belonging to the Railway Department has been sold to the Reefton Coal Company for the sum of £7OO. For many years this engine was employed in shunting work on the Greymouth wharf and previous to that it is said to. have been one of the express engines used on the Timaru run. It is an engine with a history, but the move of time put it in the obsolete class as far as the railway work was concerned, and for the last two years it has been gathering moss and rust in the local yard. It has now been overhauled and yesterday a trial run was given. It will go to Reefton at an early date.

coughs and colds. Eighteenpence buys sixty doses.—Advt. I . ; \ A quaint feature in connection with the mine which was . exploded at Oakura recently was the existence of a peculiar shell-fish which had fastened itself securely at the base of one of the horns. At a casual glance this crustacean creature of the deep appeared almost to be some species of flower. From the top of a pink and white funnel of shell it was able to poke out a conical-shaped portion of its anatomy, which would have been a beak if it belonged to a bird, as it could open out to form a mouth. For three days this curious fish was able to open its mouth and gape *at the hundreds of people who came to see the mine. At the dawn of the fourth day an effort was made to preserve the shell-fish by pulling it from its bed, but other bystanders urged “don’t pull too hard!” having fears of what the effect might be on the mine. Consequently the fish went on, another long journey with the mine on which it had spent its life. “When is the cost of living coining V down?” This question is answered if 5 you buy C.M.C. Sheep Tongues. C.M.C. Tongues have “come down” —they have been considerably reduced in price, but not in quality. Each tin contains several lambs’ tongues, a. C.M.C. Tongues need no cooking and are delicious at all times. In a letter on the Irish question to the London “Times,” Sir Horace Plunkett writes : “I will not say that the course to be followed in the ultimate settlement, which every sane man must desire to bring about at the > earliest possible moment, is a choice ‘ of evils; but I admit if is a choice of difficulties. The direction of the greatest difficulty, and certainly of the greatest resistance, is leaving things as they are. The most hopeful course is to give. to the Irish people as nearly what they are asking for as the interests of that people (which 1, ; y personally,, believe are almost identical with the interests of the other peoples in the British Isles) permit. ■ Partition, in the only thinkable form ..j. of county option, I believe to be neither desirable nor anywhere in Ire- \ land desired. I admit fully the claim ‘ f of part of Ulster to special consideration based on the y difference of its economic life from that of the resL of Ireland. Within the scope of a Do- , i minion there is ample room for provincial rights; but if one tiling has been made clear by all that has hap* - pened in the recent attempts to deal •with the Irish problem, it is that, while there may be many solutions, there is but one Ireland.”
