FALSE PRETENCES.
CHARGES AGAINST THE McGUIRES. BOTH COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Pec Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 1. Arthur Patrick McGuire and Janet Mary McGuire (his wife) were each charged at the Magistrate's Court before Mr. McCarthy, S.M., with obtaining £194 4s. (from May, 1917, to August, 1918) from William John Cupples- by false pretences. The male accused had previously been twice remanded on this charge originally from Dunedin, it being there alleged that he had obtained the money by representing that it was being used to obtain the release of a Miss Hines from a Roman Catholic Reformatory for Girls, and not a convent as previously stated. Detective Mollveney applied for a remand for a week. Mr. W. J. Hunter, for the accused, stated that the woman was in a delicate condition, and asked for nominal bail.
The Chief Detective: They might leave. I understand that McGuire was endeavouring- to leave the country when he was arrested. The Magistrate: How can anyone leave the country without a permit?
The accused wasi remanded for a week, bail being granted the femala accused in her own recognaisances, and McGuire in two sureties of .£SO each and his own surety of £IOO.
