DESERTERS ARRESTED

The local police arrested two military deserters at JEaiucri on Saturday—Messrs Caldwell and Butler, who have been handed over to tue military autiioritiesi u> receive their deserts- The men do not belong to tins ..district, ■OBITUARY. The death of another old resident of the Kanieri district took place at her residence, Kanieri, on Saturday evening, in the person of Mrs. Forsyth. The deceased 1 was 88

years of age and a native of Lanarkshire, Scotland. Her husband predeceased her a few years ago. One sun, Mr. J. Forsyth, of Kanieriy’s left to mourn the loss of a loving mother.’ The funeral took place on Monday, and the service was conducted by the Rev. P. B. Fraser. LANCE-CORPORAL BYRNE, Mrs. G. H. Chapman has been advised that her brother, LanceCorporal Y. J. Byrne, second son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Y. Byrne, had died of sickness in England. This is the third brother to lay down his life for his King and country, Ids two brothers, Frank and Charles, having been killed in action in France some time previously. LanceCorporal Byrne and his brother Charles left with the Main Body. Miss Byrne- of Rot's is a- sister of deceased. LABOUR BALL. In spite of the inclement weather the Labour Ball proved’ quite a success at the Opera House on Monday night. Fully 70 couples were on the lioor at one time, a large number of visitors from Runanga being present. The music was in* the capable hands of Messrs Lawn and Gibbons, while Messrs H. Breeze and Simmies acted in the dual capaoitv of M.C.’s. Dancing was continued' until near daybreak, when a most successful function terminated.
