GREYMOUTH BOWLING CLUB.
ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report, which will h© read at the -annual meeting to- v morrow night, is as follows: 0 “Once again wo assemble for our h annual meeting and we, are pleased v to report we have had a, most suecessful season. The weather was ® exceptionally good and members took v a keen interest in the play through- d out the year. At our last annual A gathering the hope was expressed I that the great war in which our Em- h pi re i» engaged would have been brought to"a close, but unfortunately n that has not been the case- I'Ve t can but reiterate the wish expressed I last year, and we deplore very much h the loss of life that is being ooca- « sioned, and our sympathy goes out f to the bereaved ones left to mourn fc the loss of their dear sons, brothers t i or husbands, who have fallen in the v great fight for liberty and free- n dom. It is also with regret we re- * fer to the death of Mr. J. T. Skoglund, a past president of the club, / and a most enthusiastic bowler. He p was one of the original founders of c the club, and we think w© are right a in calling him the “Father of Bowl- P ing” in Greymouth. The departure ” from Greymouth of Mr. Carter is o regretted, as he was a very keen f ( member. Our membership is likely f, to be further depleted through mem- ti bers being called for active. ser- s vice and already several have ieceived their interesting telegrams. During the season the various club cl championships were played and keen a interest was displayed throughout, s The results were as follows : Singles : Mia E. Renal; pairs: Messrs C- * Wilkes and T, Jones (skip); full rink: Messrs J. Duncan, F. Wise, T R. Johnston and J. Ring (skip); r colts: Mr. J. L. Morgan. Several l matches were also played for the r Dawson Cup, the present holdersbeing Messrs G. Wilkes, W. F. Rey- ? nolds, C. W. Yates, and M. Renai 1 (skip)- Inter-club matches were al- f so played against Hokitika for the , Ballino-er Buckles, and some very i close games resulted, the Greymouth Club, however, proving victorious 1 on each occasion, the Buckles being at present held by Messrs J. Dun- , can, F. Wise, M. J. Phillips, and P- , A. Buck (skip). ’ “West Coast Tournament. —ibis J was held at Hokitika, in January, our club sending five rinks down, and we are pleased to say brought the full rinks and pairs championships . back. The winners were: Full rink : Messrs W. Blair, T. Baxter, J. Jones and F. Spiller (skip); pairs; Messrs H. Bishop and L. Campbell (skip). The tournament will be held at Greymouth this year and the attention of bowlers is directed to the ruling of the Dominion of the N.Z. Bowling Association, which is that no bowl shall be played in Centre Tournaments unless it has been tested and stamped- “ Finance. —We regret that notwithstanding every effort being made to improve the finances of the CaUb we are ending the year with a debit balance within a few shilling o what we started with. An effort; must be made to wipe this debt off, ■ and a special meeting isi being called to discuss the position. Jhe green is now under the care of Ml. A. Fairball, who deserves our best.i thanks for the interest displayed by ; him throughout the season. It has been top dressed in preparation for the ensuing year, and gives cveiy promise of being better than it has ■ ever been. Our tlianks are also due to.the press for publicity given to bowling notes, and to Messrs W. RKettle"(hon. auditor). W. Blair (bon. treasurer), and C. W. Yates (bon. secretary) for their valuable work throughout the year. In conclusion we wish the incoming committee every success and trust that the sea son before us will be full of enjoyment to bowlers. ’
