—— L . A well-attended meeting of ladies , was held in the Presbyterian Schoolroom yesterday afternoon to hear an 1 . address from Miss Boniwell, of the [ Suclan United Mission. } Mrs. J. W. Smyth presided, and the meeting- was opened with prayer L and the reading of Scripture. By meaifsi of maps and pictures .Miss Boniwell brought clearly before her ‘ audience the immensb area 'of the ’ Sudan, its vast population of 60 . millions, and the rapid spread of the Mohammedan faith, which has al- - ready brought under its sway pnethird of the entire population of Africa. The testimony of such men as Sir Frederick Lugard, Sir Reginald Wingate, and the late Lord Kitchener was given to show- the effect of Islam on these pagan tribes. It is opposed to all social and political reform and morally is the most degrading religion in the world 1 . The' chief reason for the advance of Islam in Africa was the unceasing effortsof the Mohammedan traders and the absence of an adequate force df Christion missionaries along they border line between the pagan and the Moslem territory. Several musical items were rendered and after tea. had been served by the ladies of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, an enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close by (be singing of the Doxology. o’n Friday night in the Wesley Fail Miss- Boniwell -will lecture on “The Sudarf—its peoples, problems, and possibilities.” .
