Elizabeth Cullen, pleaded guilty to a charge of forging a. soldier’s allotment of £8 Bs, and wasi committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. AN UNACCOUNTABLE FIRE. TAIHAPE, This Day.—An unaccountable tire practically gutted an unoccupied two-storey twelve-roomed house, known as the Arcadia Hotel. The fire brigade saved it from complete destruction. The damage is \ estimated at ,£250. The owner, Mr. M. Harden, is in Auckland, and the insurances are unobtainable. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. CARTERTON, July 17.—The Borough Council Chambers were completely destroyed by fire this morning. When the outbreak was discovered the fire had too great a hold. The building was razed to the ground and the contents consumed. Nothing was saved. Mannse.ll, Hart, and Hogg, solicitors, had offices in the bunding. They also lost thing, including a valuable law library! The origin is a mystery. A RECORD FROST. CHRISTCHURCH, July 17.—The record of frost for this winter occurred til's morning. The reading at the Magnetic Observatory showed 16 degrees. Oyly on five or six occasions during the past fifteen years have so many degrees of frost been recorded. ALLEGED TOHUNGAISM. CHRISTCHURCH, July 17.—Four natives of the Chatham Islands have been • charged with Tohungaism, resulting in the death of another native, a woman, and have been committed for trial at Christchurch, on a charge of manslaughter. , The accused ar e Hore Pitwari, Peter ' . Pitwari, Ratio Pitwari, and Pitan 1181 Paniran, who were charged before the en Chatham Islands Magistrate’s Court in on July 3, with assaulting and wonndhe ing one Ria. Ilorarnona Robe, so as to ' cause her death, thereby committing a crime of manslaughter. Lengthy evidence was called to the effect that m- 1 1 0 four accused, with other members of their family, had acted as they did ib- towards deceased, with a view to expelling an evil spirit with which she r • was supposed to be affected. At the ’ inquest on-the body of the deceased held previously, the jury had found 2S ' that death had been caused by persons unknown.
