PERSONAL NOTES.
A serious operation lias been performed on Mr F. Thompson, Commissioner of ■Crown-Lands, at Nelson, and ii i? understood the doctors hold out very little hope for his recovery. A London cable message to the Australian papers states that Chung Ling 800 was accidentally shot during a performance at the Wood Green Empire Theatre, and died from his injuriesChung Ling Soo appeared in New Zei»la'nd some years ago, and, in the ordinary course of events, he would have been here again soon, as he was under contract to Fuller's, 1 Ltd., for a tour within the next few months. Ho was a most remarkable man, a conjurer of rare merit, and it is said, notwithstanding his successful posing as a Chinese juggler, was an astute Scot. A largely attended meeting of the Trinity Ladies' Guild was held at the Vicarage yesterday afternoon. Several new members were admitted, and a presentation was made to Mrs Fanselow, who has long been a member of the Guild, but is leaving Greymouth this week with her husband and family to take up their residence in Nelson. Several of the ladies present made speeches, expressing thenregret at the departure of Mrs Fanselow, and thanking her for her valuable help in the Guild, and wishing her a happy and prosperous future-in her Nelson home. After refreshments had been handerf round Mrs York on beTialf of the Guihl. presented Mrs Fanselow with a lady's Handsome morocco handbag. Mrs Fanslow suitably and feeling replied, and thanked the ladies for their beautiful and useful gift. __.
