The Ashburton Committee wrote expressing its disappointment at the Board's derision not to erect a completed school. The Department, it was stated, had asked for a statement of the Board's proposals, and the Senior Inspector had pointed out the inadvisability of more than six rooms, . since the Allenton school was to' be made a main one. It was decided that a statement of the Board's proposals be sent to the Department, togetner with a claim for the difference in cost between a wood and brick building, and that a copy of the plan he sent to the Asliburton School Committee, with the Inspector's report, the committee lobe definitely informed thai if the £IOO3 promised by Mr. Eriedlander was not available, the Board could expend only £ISOO on lite building. A letter was received from the School Committees Association, commenting o;i_the increasing tendency of school committees to resign owing to incurring financial obligations, and asking what were the responsibilities of individual members of the committees. On the motion of Mr. Banks, it was resolved to obtain a legal opinion in the matter, A letter was received from the School Committes' Association with regard to the proposal to hold a Dominion conference. It was decided to pursue the matter still further during the forthcoming Parliamentary session, GENERAL, i The chairman stated he had advanced the matter of a claim lor £IO.OOO in respect to the liabilities of the old Education Boards at a conference with the .Minister of Education, but he was afraid that it would be shelved., Moreover, the Minister seemed to be of the opinion that the Education Boards had not been wise in expending money in the 'past, and was likely to introduce legislation restricting the powers of expenditure possessed by the Education Boards.
Mr. 0. \V. Armitagc, pursuant, to notice, moved :—"That a committee be sot up to consider the practicability or otherwise of dividing the Canterbury Education District into wards for administrative purposes." The motion
was lost. Monday. April 3rd. was fixed as the date tor the school election.
