PERSONAL NOTES

Mr White, Government auditor, is at present' visiting Greymoutb. 'Mr F. Pirani, of the-Feilding S£ar, has been appointed Chairman of the Press Association for the ensuing year; Owing to sickness in his family, Mr E. Cholerton, eye specialist, left for Christchurch this morning, and will return next week.

Mr Geo. Bowles, locomotive inspector, New Zealand Railways, is at present %y» an official visit to Greymoutb. The Hon. Mr Fraser, Minister of Public Works, will arrive in Greymouth this evening, and will remain in Greymouth all dav to-morrow.

Mr 'F. Kibblewhite, manager Of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Company's motor department, left for Christchurch by the Otira express this morning. Several West Coast soldiers on final leave, including Sergt. J. Wilson, of Greymouth, left by the Otira express this morning on their return to camp. Major Sleernan,. Director of Military Training, arrives by the Otira express this evening and will inspect cadet units on the West Coast. He returns to Christchurch on Saturdav next.

Mr Winter Evans, formerly manager of the Consolidated Mines, Reefton, who left with the Reinforcements as Captain, has been promoted to the rank of Lieut. - Colonel. Mr W. S. Austin, formerly inspector of schools in the Greymouth district, has also been promoted to the same rank.

Professor Scott, of Christchurch, Mr Marchbanks (engineer to the Wellington Harbor Board), members of the New Zealand Railways Rolling Stock Commission, who are accompanied by Mr Jackson, chief mechanical engineer, arrived in Greymouth on Tuesday evening from Westport, and left again this morning by the Otira express. On Monday evening last, at Waiuta, Mr H. MeCallum, assistant surveyor of the Blackwnter Mines, who has enlisted and leaves for Trentham with the 27th Reinforcements, was entertained bv the Blackwater Mines Staff Club. On behalf of the members Mr R. R. Morrison presented Mr MeCallum with a wristlet watch, and, in'a few well-chosen remarks, complimented him on his action in volunteering for service. During the evening several loyal toasts were honored and a number of musical items given by those present.

His friends in Greymouth and around the district will be sorry to hear that Mr A. J. Morton, Inspector of Schools, is not at all in good health, nor has he been ever since he left the district.
