Mr E. J. Smith, GreyinOuth, received the following advice yesterday front the Defence authorities: "2/688 Corporal .E. B. Smith is in Manor War Hospital, Epsom, suffering from-dysentery, but'is progressing satisfactorily." .' V' Mr John E. Hawes has been placed in charge of the Westport harbor works, Mr Boult, -whose salary was £,IOOO per annum, having been given leave of absence in order to enlist. Mr Hawes is to receive £335 a year. .--,'/ Mr James Stevenson, son of" Mr ana Mr 3 Stevenson, of Shiel Street, Reef ton, has received instructions from the Defence Department to report himself at LytteltAn on March 4th, whence he will ship for England and join the Navy as an engineer.
The marriage of Mr Henry Cawley, of the Twentythird Reinforcements, to- Mis 3 Mollie Clark", third daughter of Mr 3 J. J. Clarke, of Greymouth, took place on Mon- • day, February 19th, at the Basilica, Wellington, the Rev. Father Smyth being' the officiating priest. The bride, who was ' given away by her uncle, Mr C. McCarthy, wore a. neat costume with hat to matc.h, the Misses Agnes, Ness and Eileen" McCarthy being the bridesmaids. After the ceremony the happy couple motored to tiie residence of Mrs G. aunt of the'-bride,- where the wedding breakfast was held. The bride and bridegroom sub-. nequently left for Palmerston North, where the honeymoon was, spent. The following have been appointed a Prisons Board for the Dominion: His Honor the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stint). Mr G. C. B. Jordan (Under-Secre-tary for Justice}; - Dr J. P. S. Hay (Inspector General of .Mental Hospitals), Messrs C. E.. Matthews (Inspector of Prisons), E Hall (Onehunga). G. Femyfrk (L)mredin), and W. Recce (Christchutch). Mr J. L. H. Ledger. Controller of Money Orders end Savings Banks in the Post and Telegrapr Department, ha.s retired on superannuation after forty years' service. He is being succeeded by Mr K. A. R, Hnggins, at present chief accountant of the Department, who, in addition to this present duties, is taking up the . control of money orders and savings banks. The new position of Assirffr-*--Controller has been created, and Mr F. T. R. Johnson, at present first clerk in the Accountant's branch, lias been appointed to it. Mr R. Booth. Assistant-Superin-tendent of the Telegraph Office, Dunedin, has been appointed Superintendent at ]V>nedin, as successor to Mr B. H. Keys, who retired from the service on December 31st last. Mr 11. Edser, relieving postmaster of the Otago district, has" been promoted to a similar position in the Wellington district.
