OIiDINAKY MEETING. An ordinary meeting of the Greymouth .borough Council was field last night and attended by the Mayor (Mr. G. hi. jferkmsj, Crs. J. VY. GreenBlade, J. Goodail, H. F. JJoogan, G. T. Grace, li. C. Harley, F. 0. Wade, W. H. Farfitt, and in, M. Sheedy CORRESPONDENCE. ✓ The Inangahua County Council forwarded copy of an intimation received by them from the Minister of Agriculture to the effect that an officer of the Mines •Department’ would be sent as soon as possible to carry out the necessary work in connection' with detailed survey and analysis of West Coast lime deposits.—. Received. The Hay or, moved, seconded by Cr. Greenslade, that the Minister be thanked for- his promise of prompt attention ' to the request of the local bodies. Adjutant N. Jenkins asked that the Salvation Army Band be granted the same annual subsidy as each of the other two local bands, £lO. —Received. On the motion of the Mayor, second-, ed by Or. Harley, it was decided to, reply stating that the request could not be" complied with, and explaining that the grants to the other bands had not been annual ones but only because of the great demands made on their services during the past’two years for patriotic and public purposes. The Greymouth* Harbor Board requested the Mayor to call a meeting of the Cobden Bridge Joint Committee to consider the points in dispute between the local bodies concerned, the solicitors to the said bodies to be asked to attend. —Received, the Mayor stating that the meeting of the Joint Committee would be called, as suggested, as soon as the Council’s solicitor returned to Greymouth. T. Power drew attention to the open sewer in front of his premises in High Street. He wished to form a cart entrance intb his, yard and if the Council would supply the necessary, pipes, . about a dozen, and the Engineer furnish the levels he would do r the .work at his own expense.—Referred to a sub-committee consisting of the Mayor, tli© Chairman of the Works Committee (Cr. Harley) and the Borough Engineer. The Sisters of Mercy, Greymouth, asked permission to move the fence of their ground in Gerald Street so as to join ujp their; boundary lines.—Received. Gf. Doogan suggested that it would be advisable to let the matter stand over until other streets . w£re being . closed, and then there would be only : one expense. , In the meantime the applicants could be informed that ! there would be no objection on the part of -the Council if the adjoining owners raised no objection. Cr. Greenslade' thought it would be better to ascertain the views of'the adjoining property owners on the matter. The ‘Mayor moved that the matter be held f till next meeting, the , views of adjoining, property owners to I be ascertained in the meantime. j This was seconded by Cr. Goodail and I carried. Harley, tuat the matter be referred to the Finance Committee, the Town Clerk to prepare full particulars as to charges, etc. —Carried. FINANCE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The Finance Committee reported and * recommended as follows, through s|ieir Chairman, Cr^Greenslade: — “1. Accounts amounting to £1570 5s Bd, which were paid since last meeting, were examined. £1565 15s 8d having’ been paid from the district fund account and £4 10s from the town improvements loan account. Accounts amounting to £7Ol 8s 2d. payable from the district fund account, were examined and recommended for payment. “2. It is recommended that the question of granting an increase of wages to Messrs McGirr, Heinz, Joyce and Jamieson, employees of the gas works, be left in the hands of the Mayor, and Crs. Greenslade and Harley to report to the next meeting of the Finance Committee. 3. “That Mr. ’ Brown’s attention be drawn to the fact that his account against the Borough was not rendered for some considerable time, and in future will not be recognised ..unless rendered monthly. “4. That Mr. Geo. Hanrahan’s account be passed for payment. “5. The General Committee recommends that the chess players be granted the use of the magazine room for the purpose of playing chess and draughts up till 10 p.m. on week nights, subject to the Club members guaranteeing to be responsible for magazines, etc., in the room. The Committee recommends that Mr. R. Williams, who wrote on behalf of the* chess players, be informed accordingly, and that the room be open to the public. “8. Messrs. Kennedy Bros, wrote to the Committee re the Council’s offer to allow them the sum of £l7O in full settlement of their account against the Borough. It was decided to place the letter in the hands of the sub-commit-tee, consisting 'of the Mayor and Chairman of Finance to reply to Messrs Kennedy Bros. “7. Regarding the application of the Borough Inspector for an allowance towards the upkeep of his horse, the Committee' recommends that considering the necessity for the Inspector to, keep a horse for the effici&icy of hia work in the pounding of cattle, horses, etc., and considering the Council is not and has not been bearing the expense of cycle repairs >for the Inspector as hitherto, that the Council grant him £5 per year towards the expense _of horse maintenance, subject to revision by the Council at any time.

“8. That in view of the increased price of kerosene that Mr. S. Cook, lamplighter of street lamps at Blaketown and Preston Road, be allowed an increase equivalent to the difference between the price of kerosene now ruling and tiie price when he undertook the work. “9. That a monthly return of receipts -.and expenditure be embodied in the Finance Committee’s report. / “10. That all outstanding revenue be sued for. “11. That the matter of appointing a clerk temporarily to attend to the issuing of summonses be left in hands of the Chairman of the Finance* Committee and the Town Clerk., “12. The receipts from April Ist., 1916, to June 30th.. 1916. amounted to £4,156 3s 4d and the expenditure for the same period to £6,505 Is.” The report was adopted, Cr. Sheedy objecting to the clause proposing a horse maintenance allowance. to the Inspector of Nuisances.
