Michael Carey, a soldier, charged with the murder of Frederick Allen in a street quarrel recently, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Mr. Cassidy, for, accused, who is a member of the 16th lie info rcements, asked the Bench to reduce the charge to one of manslaughter, but the request was .refused.
THE ACCUSED MAN. AN AUSTRALIAN BY BIRTH. Very little is known of Private Carey, who is charged with murder, beyond the fact that he is of Aus tralian birth, and worked on the West Coast prior to enlisting in the 16th Reinforcements. He was formerly a private in G Company, and recently was transferred toe machine-gun section. By a sergeant of the G Companv he is described as being rather a quiet man, and anything but' a grumbler. He is of medium height, well set-up, and sturdily built, being of the stature that is usually associated with men who can look after themselves.
