PERSONAL NOTES.
Mrs Ruane, Lower Dobson, has received cabled advice that her son, F. J. Ruane, who was wounded at the Dardanelles, is now convalescent and has been discharged from the- Alexandria Hospital. No doubt he will be again sent to the firing-line immediately. A verv old ra blent of Totara Flat, in the person of Luke Halpin, died at the Greymouth Hospital last evening. Ho wag unmarried and 83 years of age. A hoy named Percy Havill, 10 years of age, and son of Mrs Millar, of Preston Road, died in the Grey River Hospital on Saturday evening. He had been suffering from rheumatic fever for some time, and his untimely end is deeply mourned by sorrowing relatives. Mr A. Panther, who is well known in shipping circles, is at present visiting Greymouth, staying at the Commercial Hotel.
Captain Cain, formerly of the Union Company’s collier Kaitangata, who left for London as fourth officer of the Gorinthic, to join the Royal Naval Reserve, has been undergoing gunnery training at the Devonporb Naval Barracks, England. Captain Cain’s many friends in Greymouth will wish him every success.
Mr F. Roche lia s been appointed by the Westport Trotting Club to act as their delegate at the Trotting Clubs’ Conference to be held in Wellington.
Afer a residence of 22 years in Palmerston North in the railway service. Mr W. T. Wilson, President of the A.S.R.S., who is well-known on the West Coast, has been promoted to the position of depot chargeman at Frankton Junction, and will take up his new duties in about a fortnight’s time. Captain Colclough leaves Greymouth on Thursday next for Christchurch, where ho will attend a meeting of group commanders on Friday next.
Lieut. Hopkins, of Canterbury, has been appointed Quartermaster for Group 11, and has entered upon his new duties at the local Defence office. Private Orpwood, of Reefton, has been appointed group clerk at the same office, and takes up his duties this week. Mr J. Myers (Wellington) is paying a visit to the Coast. He expects to reach Greymouth to-morrow. Mr W. D. Smith (Myers and Co.) arrived this morning on Ids usual visit to the Coast. Mr A. P. Harper, genera] manager of the North Brunner mine, is duo overland to-morrow. < Mrs J. L. Doogan, of Otaki. arrived overland from Christchurch on Saturday evening, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Higgins, Alexander Street.
