A number of numerously signed petitions wore presented by Mr Seddon from West Coast residents in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, praying for the extension of the Westland railway from a point near Ross to the south "side of the Mikomii River, a distance of about four mites. ■ ; - ft, was pointed out tiiat the line was authorised in 1911, in which year a vote of £5090 was passed for the woik. Since 1912, when a small sum was spent on the work, all further expenditure had, ceased, and the vole had lapsed. The extension of the railway was urged as a work of great need for the cuconiagement and development of settlement, the district to be tapped by it being :: rapid'y growing settlement where pastoi.il and dairying pursuits are flourishing.
