PERSONAL NOTES.

Mr C. F. A. Broad, managed of the Greyniouth branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, returned overland from Christchurch last night after a month’s holiday. : /:>, ■ Mr Tom Jones, Assistant Inspector of Departmental Accounts, N.Z. Treasury, Wellington, an old West Coaster, has been appointed Field Paymaster to the 7th Reinforcements and Earl Liverpool’s Own% Regiment, now in camp at Trentham. The appointment carries with it a commission ’ as lieutenant.

Captain Nalder, son of Mr T. Nalder, of Port Nelson, and a cousin of Mr N. Nalder, of the S.M. Court, Hokitika, and late captain of the s.s. Storm, is now lieutenant-commander of H.M.S. Colleague, a new trawler, on patrol duty on the coast of England. Mr Geddes (also late of the s.s. Storm) is chief engineer of the Colleague.

The news of the death of T. A. Murphy, formerly Collector of Customs at | Greymouth, will he received with regret by his many friends in these parts-. Cf late years he had resided, in Christchurch, having retired some time ago. When pt f Greymouth, the late Mr Murphy, who enjoyed the respect and esteem of ail with, whom he came in contact, was a courteous official, a keen cricketer, and withal a good sport. His wife survives him, and to her will be extended the sincere sympathy of numerous friends. At the invitation of the Town Clerk, Mr F. H. Denton, the members of the Greymouth Borough Council and representatives of the press assembled in one of the ante-rooms of the municipal- offices after the Council meeting last night, to join him in a little refreshment prior - to his departure on a month’s holiday. The Mayor (Mr G. E. Perkins), in a felicitous speech, referred to Mr Denton’s approaching marriage, and offered him most hearty congratulations and the best of wishes for the future happiness and prosperity of himself and bride. Other-speakers followed in similar strain, all bearing testimony to the thoroughness, ability, and courtesy with which Mr Denton has always discharged his important duties. Mr .Denton made brief but suitable acknowledgement.
