PERSONAL NOTES
Mr J. A. Hunan, M.P. for Invercargill, was an outward passenger for Christchurch this morning. Mr Justice Stringer, Judge of the Arbitration Court, will arrive in Greymouth from Christchurch to-night, and will stay at the Albion Hotel. Mr C. W. Cooke, local agent for the Public Trustee, left on Saturday last for Wellington, where a conference of the Department's local managers throughout the Dominion is being held. A Wellington telegram records the death of Sidney Diamond, aged 80 years, who arrived in Welington in 1841 in the ship William Bentinck. Mrs Rickard, postmistress at Aliaura, who has been on holiday leave, visiting friends in the North, returned on Friday last and resumed duty on Monday. Mr and Mrs Nash (Waiiganui), who have been visiting Mrs F. Heirne, Brick Street, returned to their home via Christ church by this morning's express train. Mr J. Vigor Brown, M.P. for Napier, left this morning for Hokitika and will visit the lakes to-day. He haves tomorrow morning for Reefton en route for Nelson. The members of the Reefton Band held a social gathering in the band room at Reefton on Saturday night and presented the popular bandmaster, Mr S. Austin, with a. case of pipes. We. regret to learn of Ihe indisposition of Mr. G. B. Shepherd, of Reefton, who has been confined to his bed for the past week, but are pleased to learn his health is slowly improving and we hope lie will soon he about again. Dr Eleanor Baker, medical inspector under the Education Department, will commence her in the Grey district on Monday next, and will visit, the principal schools.
Mr W. J. Fowler, clerk in the Hokitika Railway Station office, is under notice t<> transfer to Greymouth this week. Mr Charles Gallagher, of the Grevmouth office, will fill the vacancy, and will proceed to Hokitika to-morrow. Mr. J. W. Dickie, M.P. for Selwyn, will arrive overland from Christchurch tonight by the Otira express on a. short visit to the Coast, Mr. Dickie was formerly a resident of Cobden. and his many friends in this district will bo pleased t<> accord him a hearty welcome back to his "old haunts." Professor Walter Thomas Mills has resigned his position as national organiser of the Social Democratic Party owing, he states to a complete breakdown physically. He is returning at once to his home to enter a hospital for treatment of an old disorder, which is rapidly growing worse. The intended visit of the Minister of Justice (Mr. A. L. Herdman) to Reefton has been countermanded, and Mr. Median manager if the Murray Creek Coalmining Company stopped the departure of a motor car to meet Mr. "Herdman at Glenhope. He was also instructed to withdraw the application for a decree of forfeiture against the Consolidated Goldfields in respect to a certain area. Mr W. McKenzie-Gibson is to become teller at the local branch of the 'Bank of New Zealand, vice Mr H. Cornwall, who
has been promoted to be teller and accountant at tho Leeston branch. During his connection with the Greymouth office Mr Cornwall has proved himself an obliging and courteous officer, who well deserves the promotion he has now obtained.
