OBITUARY

HENRY SPENCER, An'early pioneer has passed a way in the person of Mr. Henry Spencer, who died at his residence, Waitara, North Island, on the 14th inst. Mr. Spencer was born in Moy, County Armagh, lieland, in 1342. He was a grandson of Colonel Gray, of the Inniskillen Dragoons, and Mary O'Ne'il (his wife), of Shane Castle, Armagh. He came to Australia with his parents in 1848, and landed on the West Coast during the gold rush in 1864, after walking overland from Christchurch with a party of other miners, including 'Robert Speei, who afterwards became his partner in many other enterprises. They were, known as the "Gray 8r05.," and they struck some of the richest mines on the South Beach. Mr. Spencer also lived for many years in Murchison. He was married in 1866 to Miss Ellen Willshire, of Hobart, their marriage being the third to take place in Greymouth. He greatly regretted not being able to attend the Westland Jubilee, owing to ill-health. He has a brother, Archdeacon Spencer, of Goulburn, and a sister, Mrs. Jacobs, of Sydney. He leaves a wife and family of eight sons and daughters, viz.. Mrs. A. Crumpton (Dobson), Mrs. D. Griffiths (Tikorangi), Mrs. H. Thomas (Wellington), Miss Spencer and Mr. H. Spencer (Sydney), Mr. D. Spencer (Hu'tt), Mr. G. Spencer (Carrington Road), and Mr. E. Spencer (Waitara) to mourn their loss and For whom sincere sympathy Avill be felt in their bereavement.
