CHOLERA ON BOARD

WELLINGTON, January 26.—The steamer Achlibster, which on arrival yesterday from Calcutta was ordered into quarantine owing to having cholera cases on board, has a crew mainly of Asiatics,, with one or two negroes, and her officer's are Europeans. The Achlibster left Calcutta for Wellington on December 18, and on Christmas Day an Asiatic fireman contracted the disease in a severe form. Nothing could be done for him and he died in a few hours. The body was buried at sea. Subsequently a few mild cases developed among other members of the crew, but stringent methods checked the epidemic. There have been no syrnp. toms of the malady since 27th December.; All on board the Achlibster now are well, POSSIBLY POISONED. GISBORNE, January 26.—At the inquest into the case of .James Dobie who died at the hospital yesterday after a drinking bout, the medical evidence suggested that death was possibly due to corrosive poisoning,, and the inquiry was adjourned pending a report from the Government Analyst on the contents of the deceased's stomach. An empty bottle, which had contained a patent medicine, of which, according to medical testimony, phosphoric acid was a constituent part, was found near deceased's bed at his home. / DROWNED. . BLENHEIM, This Day.—A labourer named John Illingworth, 44 years of age was drowned in the Wairau river at Spring Creek yesterday. He attempted to swim across the creek, but sank halfway. It is presumed that he was overtaken by cramp. The body has been recovered. YOUNG MAN DROWNED. AUCKLAND, This Day.—John Orristein, 21 years, was drowned at Ponsonby on Saturday afternoon. He was last seen at 3 p.m. sitting on a rock in bathing dress. Subsequently two young women found the body floating near shore and dragged it on boa,rd. Restorative measures were futile. A young woman named Minnie Frewin pleaded guilty to a charge of setting fire to the Taupiri billiard room. A quantity of wood, shavings, etc., were placed near the building and ignited. The tenants diacovered the flames in time to save the building.and contents. Accused was committed for sentence. ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED. WELLINGTON, This Day.-At the inquesth on the body of a hulk keepor named James Waterstreet, hwo was drowned in the harbour on 6th January, a verdict was returned that deceased was accidentally drowned, no blame being attachable to anyone. AN ART UNION? I CHRISTCHURCH, This Day—At the Magistrate's Court, H. J. Besick, a solicitor, was charged with a breach of the Gaming Act. in.' having, as chairman of the recent Domain fete, sanctioned an art union with a trip to Australia as a prize. The information was laid under sectioh 42, but Mr Harper, for defendant, objected that the trip could not be regarded as a work of art. The information was amended by substituting section 41. The magistrate expressed his unwillingness to convict Beswick personally, though the offence was not doubted. Mr Harper suggested that the police withdraw' the information in order to avoid a conviction, the purpose of the prosecution being served by recognition of. the offence. SubInspector M'Kinnon consented to an adjournment in order to consult the authorities. WORK AT LYTTELTON. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.-- Work at tlie port is very slack, only 75 men being employed to-day. Ten ex-strikers and many old hands are still away in the country where employment'is brisk. -
