WELLINGTON V. HAWKE’S BAY. WELLINGTON. This Day

The interprovincial Rugby match Wellington v. Hawke’s Bay, was played on Saturday and proved a walk-over tor the home team, who simply did practically as they, liked in the first spell, and piled on 18 points to nil, tries being obtained by Young (4), Hecta and Shearer. In the second spell the visitors made a better stand, and while unable to score themselves prevented Wellington from adding any further: points.

A DRAWN GAME

A football match, Otago v. a Maori team, was played on Saturday in perfect weather, and on a splendid ground. The standard of play was not high, though the .game was fairly fast in the second spell. The game resulted in a draw.

Grace kicked a penalty goal Tor Maoris and Watson did likewise for Otago.

AUCKLAND DEFEATS WELLINGTON

AUCKLAND. July 19. The Wellington Rugby fifteen played Auckland to-day for the Ranfurly Shield, and suffered defeat by six points (a penalty goal and an unconverted try) to five points (a converted try). A strong wind blew almost straight down the field, and heavy rain fell almost continuously.

Wellington had the wind in the first spell, and had Auckland defending most of the' time. The first try came after 37 minutes’ play. Roberts secured from a loose forward rush and the ball went to McKenzie, Kinvig. and Mitchinson. who beat Mae Kay and scored a brilliant try. Evenson converted. The visitors continued to press but found D Leary, lull back a stumbling block. Evenson had a fruitless attempt at goal. The see ond half opened with Wellington attacking, but long kicking b.w the Auckland backs kept them off. 0 Leary had a fruitless .shot at the goal, but bad a successful shot soon afterwards. During on., of Auckland’s sudden rushes the deciding try was secured from a high punt from half wav bv Mackay. Kinvig mulled and Nesbit'scored. O’Leary failed to kick a goal. ' QUEENSLAND V. N.S. The Union Rugby match resulted as follows :—Queensland 13, New South Wales 3.
