OBITUARY. ■ Thomas Gerrard, a prominent’' figure in CHRISTCHURCH, July 21.—Mr Gerlard, a prominent figure in commercial circles in Christchurch, died last night, aged 69 years. He was indentified with musical societies here for many years. He arrived at Nelson 50 years ago and came Id Christchurch in 1882. SENSATIONAL ESCAPE.
WELLINGTON, July 21.—Early this morning, an eight-roomed shop and dwelling at Island Bay was destroyed by fire:
Mr W. 0. Wilkinson and his wife were sleeping up stairs. The first intimation that Wilkinson had was the flames licking on his face. He threw his wife put of the window, and then jumped. Both were taken to the doctor suffering from burns to their faces and feet and a strained back. Their injusier arc not serious. ALLEGED THEFTS. AUCKLAND, This Day. A. G. Brett, clerk of the Eden Terrace Road Board, was charged at the police court at the instance of the Audit Department with, failing to qccount for £l3 3s 3d and was remanded for a week.
