OPINIONS DIFFER

MINISTER AND TRADES COUNCIL,

by telegraph—ter press association

CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. The following letter was read at a meeting of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council from the Hon. J. Allen:—

“I am in receipt of your letter of June 25th, forwarding a copy of the resolution passed at a meeting held on 19th instant. I do not agree with your council that there is any danger in a New Zealand Minister accepting an invitation to sit on the Committee of Imperial Defence, nor do I think that.there would be any menace to democracy in so doing. I think it would be of assistance to democracy, and also a safety for the Minister to be there. The Committee of Imperial Defence is only advisory, and has no executive functions. I have also to inform you that I, as Minister representing New Zealand, 'committed the country to nothing whatever, neither to a financial burden nor anything else. All I have done is to bring back certain suggestions to the Cabinet. If the Cabinet agrees they will be submitted to Parliament, and I trust Parliament will agree with the suggestions.” Xhe letter was received
