TRUE POSITION IN THE NEW PIEBRIDES.
GRAVE CHARGES AGAINST THE FRENCH.
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.]
BRISBANE, This Day
The Presbyterian Assembly carried a resolution expressing regret at the continuance of abuses in the New Hebrides under the condominium, and asking the Australian and Imperial Governments to take stens to stop these injustices. The speakers reiterated the charges against the French of selling liquor to the natives, of wholesale kidnapping of natives, of beating them almost to death, and of selling natives to one another. The French would not make their subjects keep the law. No matter what decision the joint commission may give, it can only be enforced by Government officials of the offending party.
The Rev. F. Pattin declared the condominium rotten. It was a thorough disgrace to Great Britain to have anything to do with it. Years ago the missionaries could leave their wives on the islands and they would be safe. Since the French sold grog to the natives, however, white women were no longer safe.
