The Hon. W. H. Hcrrics left Wellington for the south last evening to complete his inspection of the railway lines. He stated that he was not in a position to announce tlie name of the, new General Manager of Railways, but it might be made public a few da vs after the Cabinet meets.

Amongst the passengers making the journey from Cass to Otira to-day by Messrs Cassidy and Co.’s coaches and arriving in Grevmmith to-night are the following: Messrs Young. Griggs. Green. Brown. Ramsay, Haggerty. Mnndv, Syne, Smith. Petterson, Lanley, Hall. Peck. Absalom, Wauchope, Goss, McLaverty. Owen, Kettle. Paine. Varcoe, McDougall and Fraser (Commissioner of South Africa); Mesdames Birss, Austin. Owen. McLaverty. and Hall; Misses Boyd and Birss. The death of Mrs J. Jones occurred at Greyrnouth on Saturday morning last. Mrs Jones (formerly Mrs John Nolan) was well known in this district, and was a member of the well-known Cron family of South Westland,, being the second youngest daughter. She leaves a family of three children and three step-children. Mr Jones, who has been made a widower twice in four years, will have the sympathy of many friends. The relatives will also have the sympathy of a circle of friends in their bereavement. The funeral took place yesterday and was largely attended.

Mrs McGregor, a. former resident of Greyrnouth. who had done invaluable work for the Westport Croquet Chib as its secretary, was, last Friday entertained by (he members of the club and made the recipient of a handsome taken of esteem in the form of a. silver cake basket,'suitably inscribed. Mrs Dalgleish made the presentation and expressed the regret of the club at the approaching departure of .Mrs McGregor, who is shortly leaving for Nelson, to which city Mr McGregor is promoted in the P, aml T. service. Mrs McGregor suitably acknowledged the compliment. The resignation of Miss Kernple as teacher at the Paroa School was accepted with regret at last night's meeting of the Grey Education Board, and on the motion of the Chairman (Mr H. J. Bignell) it was unanimously decided to grant her two months’ salary as a retiring allowance, in recognition of her long and valued services to the Board. The Board is to be commended for its action, for Miss Kemple has proved herself a devoted and excellent teacher, whose place it will he difficult to fill. For a long period she lias I been mistress of the Paroa School, and the j great advance, made by the pupils under {her direction bears eloquent testimony to her ability as a teacher. The Paroa resii dents, amongst whom Miss Kernple is extremely popular, will regret her departure from their midst. Last night a large number of officers and scouts met at Trinity Hall to bid farewell to their late Commissioner, the Rev. Taylor, who is leaving for Nelson. The officers present were Deputy Commissioner Sweetman, Provincial Secretary Phair, .Chief Scoutmaster Vesper and Scoutmasjters Lewis, Gibbons and Brown. Deputy : Comissionemr Sweetman was in the chair and spoke feelingly on the Rev. Taylor’s sterling qualities and unselfish labor devoted to the Scout ■ Movement which had made it so prominent on the West Coast at the present day. He then called upon C. S. Vosper to present the Rev. Taylor with a small token from the Officers and Scouts as a mark of esteem in which he was held by the Greyrnouth troop. The different officers and several of the Scouts also spoke of the sterling qualities of their late Commissioner and wished him and Mrs Taylor God-speed and every prosperity in their new home.
