SYDNEY, August; 9 —Chidley’s letters in the press, insisting on his sanity, are attracting much attention and a strong movement is afoot to secure another- medical - examination. Mr. McGowan, in the Assembly promised to obtain a report on his mental ‘ condition and to table the papers dealing with Chidley. DARING ROBBERY. SYDNEY, August 10.— A daring robbery occurred at Darling Harbour railway station. A dray load of rabbit skins valued at £2OO disappeared in the night. Two watchmen did not see anything, though it must haver taken at least two hours to unload tho dray. The police recovered the bulk of the skins and arrested two of an American gang whom the police assert are guilty of many city robberies lately. DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED. PERTH, August 9.—Tho death sentences in the Broom© murder case have been commuted. ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES. MELBOURNE, This Day—During the six months ended June 30th . 84,252 persons arrived in Australia against 65,243 for the corresponding period of 1911. The departures numbered 40,467, against 34,862. Received this day at 10.10 a.m. * SYDNEY, This Day.—The dispute between the Federal and State Governments over Governor-General’s residence in Sydney has been settled. Lord Denman remains in possession, the Federal Government paying rental of about £4,500 yearly. The rental is reckoned at the rate of 31 per centum on the vapital value. The amount will depend on the area of land required. Tho arrangement i s only good during Lord Denman’s tenure of office, whereupon it reverts to the State.

AN EARTHQUAKE. SYDNEY, August 9—Die Riverview College seismograph yesterday, shortly before noon recorded a great but very distant tectonic earthquake apparently 7,000 miles away. THE CANADIAN CADETS. SYDNEY, This Day.—Mr. Davy states that it was unciex-stood, on leaving Vancouver, that there would be 5,000 dollars ready in the bank. The leading citizens guaranteed this, but evidently thought there was no immediate necessity. The cadets also anticipated free passes on railways. Conibere, of 1 oorak, have offered to erect buildings costing £15.000 for the Young Women s Christian Association as a mem qrial to their father.
