He pleaded guilty to stealing postal packets from the Wanganui Post Office. Moore was office cleaner and obtained, entrance to the mail room by a key which also fitted the private box lobby. Numbers of letters have been missing for sonie time past. Accused was caught by a detective tampering with letters. BURNED TO DEATH. 1 WANGANUI, This Day.—A man named Cameron was burned to death in his whare at Aberfeldie last night. There are no details. AN UNFOUNDED REPORT. • ;; INVERCARGILL, This Day.—Owing to some unfortunate misunderstanding, a report gained , currency yesterday to tho effect that Mr Robert Cleave had died at A venal that morning. Mr Cleave is not dead. AN ACTING MAYOR HONOURED. / WELLINGTON, This Day.—Councillor John Smith, who has been a member of the City Council since 1885, and was Act-ing-Mayor during Mr Wilford’s absence through illness, was to-day presented by the Wellington citizens with a purse of sovereigns in recognition of the service® he rendered to the city. The presentation was made by the Mayor, Mr D. MeLaren. A MAN DROWNED. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.—A map named John Taylor, in the employ of A. E. Denton, was drowned in the Hururidi rivet about 10.30 yesterday morning. Three horses were also drowned. The river was in Hood. Thfe body lias ait yet been recovered.
