PERSONAL NOTES
Mr H. Coppersmith, Mayor Runanga, was in town to-da^. Mrs William Panckhurst, of Westport,, and daughter of Mr and Mrs Wm. Holder, arrived overland last evening. Our Westport correspondent states that the Hon; J. and Mrs Colvin, Messrs McAlister and A. W. Smith left, this morning by,the overland route for Nelson. A Dunedin Press message states that the Jewish community at Dunedin have given a call to the Rev. M. Diniond, of Newcastle, New South Wales.
Our Westport ’correspondent wires as follows:)—-Among the passengers who left Westport for Greymouth overland to-day were. Mrs Gruer and two children, Messrs King, Cramp, Hustler, Smith, Walker, Bellett, Low, Bon/.oni, and Hills. A Dunedin Press message states that advice from Rotorua states that the doctor advises a great improvement in the 'Hon. J. A. Millar’s condition. The blood pressure is down a good-deal, and the sight slowly returning over the whole affected eye. There is every ohance of a complete recovery with care. The many friends of Mrs C. H. King, of J Reefton, will regret to hear of the death of her eldest son, Walter, at Auckland on Sunday. The joung man was only 25, and had a brilliant future before him. He was surveying when he contracted the illness that has ended so fatally. The greatest sympathy is expressed with the family in their affliction. The deceased was a brother of Mr Geoffrey King.
Rt. Rev. Monsignor Ahern, whose death at Casino, N.S.W., was recorded by the Press Association on Friday, was at one time conducting a mission at Ross, where many settlers still respect his memory. He went from Ross to Waipawa (H. 8.). Subsequently when writing to a first cousin who now resides in Greymouth the Rev. gentleman stated that he held the chair of classics in the Grafton College for training young men for the priesthood. The work, he then said, was very much to his taste, though it entailed long hours and close attention* From the geographical position of Casino it can be inferred that the Rt. Rev. gentleman had gone there for recuperation which failed.
