GREYMOUTH TROTTING CLUB

ACCE FT ANDES TO-N TG HT. Acceptances for the first day’s events at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s midsummer meeting close with the Secretaiy (Mr E. A. Wider.) at the Albion Hotel this evening at nine o’clock. Owners and trainers will please remember the fact. NOTES ON THE FORTHCOMING MEETING. During the last few days Victoria Park has presented quite a busy appearance, although the weather has been rather unsettled. The caretaker (Mr E. Quinn) lias shown much consideration to owners and the local horses arc thus fairly well forward. However, they wi!l need to To, ns the opposition from outside is paiticnlarly strong for this meeting. T. Aniietb, once one of our IcaWng local trainers, arrived from Christchurch on Tuesday evening, bringing Indian Maid, Miss Sylvia and Umukuri. J. Rainey, with Baron Lyon, Cupid Whispers and Adrian Hope arrived last evening, and A. Binnie, with four horses; F. Amor with Yellow Ribbon and the Scout and Westerman’s Dollar Princess arc all expected to arrive this evening. Most of the Canterbury horses have engagements at Westport, and leave by the Mapourika to-day. Our meeting, which begins on Tuesday, 2nd January, will no doubt be the most successful summer meeting the club has yet had. The nominations are a record and the class of horses engaged are the best. The order of the day will be big fields with good finishes, and probably some track records may be established. Acceptances are due this evening and close with the secretary at the Albion Hotel at 9 p.m. ROUND ABOUT RiCCCARTON. NOTES ON COMING EVENTS. HORORATA MEETING. MADAM MADCAP BROKE DOWN. [BX TELEGKASH —SPECIAL TO THE STAR.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

Visitors to the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday spent a miserable day, the weather conditions in the afternoon being by no means pleasant. The gathering, however proved successful, the racing being well up to the average, and the totalisator returns were also satisfactory.

H. Thomson was the most successful of the local trainers and he led in two winners, viz., Clanmena and Early Mem.

F. Holmes drove the winners of the two trotting events. J. O'Brien, a promising apprentice in H. Thomson’s stable, rede two winners.

Ciaiunena’s form in the Bangor Plate, with S.ll in the saddle, on a heavy course, was distinctly good, but the Clanranald mare had only weak opposition, Gome, who should have been the better of her two opponents, failing to run up to expectations. This filly, by Sant Alario —Cora Lynn, has dene well in private and should not be long before she strikes better form in her public essays. Santa Rosaleer, by Sant Alario— Bridal Rose, had a pretty easy win in the Hororata Cup, in which Outlander could get no nearer than third. The Finland horse was saddled up again later in the day. but made no showing, probably due to the heavy nature of the going. A'light of other days seen out at the meeting was Ivanoff, the winner of the Welcome Stakes in 1905. He started in the Farmer’s Plate among 1 very ordinary hacks and ran nowhere.

It is reported that all is not well with Mad Whirl, the Treadmill— Madowla filly in the Chokebore stab.e, and she has been turned out for a lengthy spell. She ;s one of the biggest two-year-olds I have ever seen, and as she is still growing a rest will enable her to furnish out by the time her three-year-old engagements come round.

1). Roberts has returned Pert, by Martian—Clytie, to her owner (Mr. H. Knight, of Racecourse Hill). The filly has not been doing too well lately, and as Roberts Found it practically impossible to get her in any satisfactory condition it was deemed advisable to treat her to a lengthy spell. Pert ran unsuccessfully at Hororata, G. Murray Aynsley has again put Coroniform-in work after an enforced spell. The Multiform gelding some time ago sustained an injury to one.of his knees while runming in the paddock, but I understand that he is now' alright again, and is to be prepared for the Mid-summer meeting at Riccarton.

At R. O’Donnell's sale of property and effects at his residence on Tuesday last, the Seal Rock—Palotta gelding, and the Achilles —Chainstitch filly far.led to find buyers, but the Boniform —lngleneuk filly changed hands at a price somewhere in the vicinity of 52 guineas. The two former have been placed in G. A. Pine’s bands. H. Cutts left for Auckland on Thursday last in charge of Counterfeit, Masterpiece, Winning Way, Avarice and Scottish Star. Mr. Greenwood’s team, consisting of Miss Mischief, Byron, Canute ami Lady Georgia left for Auckland on Friday in charge of R, J, Mason, Cottin Jnr. returned from his successful southern trip last week, hut did not bring either Grand Rose or Kohinoor back with him, they being left in charge of V. Cotton. 1 undersand that T. Cotton' came up with the intention of supervising the preparation of Santa Roseleer for the Hororata Cup, which he duly won. It is reported that Tawhaki is amiss again. ilis near foreleg filled ominously whilst doing slow work at Wingatui a few days ago, and MeCombe dems it unwise to further persevere with the horse, so though not actually broken down, he is on the list of jn effectives. A fortnight ago Tawhaki locked likely to win at Xmas. Penates 'is evidently doing all right, for he is an acceptor at Dunedin gnfl is engaged at Oamaru. J. McCombe went up to the Woodville meeting, and there purchased two horses for his patrons. Taft (by Freedom) is one of these, and is to be given a tou/r of the Southland meetings. The other recruit to the stable ( is the six-year-old mare Parable, by Mcmves—Palaver, She is nw own. 1

ed by Mr. W. Cross:)n and may be seen out >if the weights suit in the Farewell Handicap at Dunedin. DUNEDIN MEETING. The Dunedin meeting will attract a good deal of attention amoilg Canterbury sportsmen to whom the Southern club generally looks to provide the means of making its gathering successful. The fields promise to be fairly large, though not particularly impressive 'in point of quality. Rose Noble is at the top of the list of eight acceptors for the Otago Handicap, the principal race on tire nrst day, and though the daughter of Medallion has 9.1 to carry she put up so good a performance in the lendalton Handicap at Riccarton last month that she must be given a chance. Waiju also reads well and The Cornet and Mumura are two likely Ric-carton-tracined candidates. Mumura has been doing particularly well on the tracks, and the St. Ambrose gelding should show a big improvement on his last public form. In the Federal Handicap Soldier’s Chorus,, whose Timaru form was most impressive, My Lawyer, Stepmeter and Crosbie are the pick of the field, while .Donates must be given a chance if he is in any form at all. . Crosbie will have to put up a penally for his win at Hororata on Saturday, of a penalty to the minimum )mp,„t but in his present form the addition should be a matter of indifference to the Lupin horse, which will probably be well supported by local sports. It is just reported that Madam Madcap has broken down and will not g > to the Manawatu meeting, as her suspensory ligament has given away. There is no prospect of the brilliant Clanranald—Madowla mare racing again, and though she should make a j fine brood mare, the loss of so sterling i a performer is extremely regrettable. I The Treadmill—Gold Leaf colt An-1 tunmus in the Choke bore stable ap-' pears to be sound again, but; has not yet.been put to any searching test.
