[BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL TO THE; STAB.]
DUNEDIN, TliiS - Day
It seems certain that shipping fa'res and freights will be raised in New Zealand in the near future. The Australian - ' Companies have increased their charges ~y five per cent to cover increased expenditure, as a result of improved wages to seamen, and as the shipping firms domiciled in the Dominion are being pressed from various quarters to increase the wages of officers, seamen and waterside workers, the ultimate effect of it all-is almost sure to be a vise in the prices charged to the public. It is thought in local shipping circles that the present rates not he .altered this year.
