AGAINST HOME RULE. LONDON, Dec. B.—From a National standpoint the Hon. Bonar Law speaking at Bootle, emphasising that it was utterly impossible for Home Rule to be carried as part of the Liberals corrupt political bargain. He remarked that, although to grant Home Rule from a Party standpoint was an advantage to tha unionists inasmuch as the Nationalists were solidly against them, the Unionists were determined to oppose Home Rule to the last gasp. When Ihe time came there would be no shrinking from the strong action necessary to defeat one of the most ignoble conspiracies over formed against the liberties of freeborn men.

Samuels's refusal of an enquiry into wages conditions until 1913, when a commission will be appointed, after the Board of Trade Enquiry into the cost of living will have reported. The extremists urge a strike at Christmas. THE INSURANCE BILL. LONDON, Dec. 8. The Friendly Societies have petitioned the House of Lords to amend the Insurance Bill so as to enable the pay for sickness benefits to be on the first day of illness instead of the fourth. COMPULSORY TRAINING. LONDON, Dec. 8. NEW YORK, Dec. B.—ln the Superior Court, the Chicago packers trial has commenced, after preliminary proceedings extending for several years, while the jury was being selected. Violation of anti-trust laws was charged against eleven prominent packers. PERSIA APPEALS TO THE STATES. WASHINGTON, Dec. B.—-Persia has appealed to the United States against Russian aggression, trusting to their sentiments of honour and justice to secure Persians against oppression. COAL MINERS IN CONFERENCE. LONDON, Dec. B.—The Hull coal owners and miners delegates met in Conference on the 19th to consider the minimum wage.
