RUSSIA AND PERSIA.

LATEST CABLES

A RUSSIAN ULTIMATUM

[PC* PEE 99 ASSOCIATION—COPriIOHT.]

TEHERAN. Dec. I.—The Mejliso is considering the Russian ultimatum at a secret session.

LONDON, December 1,

Sir Edward Grey, dealing with the Persian situation said the effect of Russia’s action may be very serious. No reflections were cast on Shuster’s energy or intentions, but his persistence in appointing British officials in North Persia made things impossible. The Government is consulting with Russia how best the Anglo*-Russian agreement can remain unimpaired. Russia has assured Britain that her occupation is temporary. The Hon Winston Churchill answered Lord Beresford, and stated that two cruisers from Australia were recently ordered to join the China squadron temporarily in view of possible developments.

ADVANCE OF RUSSIAN TROOPS, TEHERAN, December 1.

Russia has declined to extend the time limit. The Mejliss has rejected the ultimatum although Sir Edward Grey urgently telegraphed advising them to comply. Thereupon' Russian troops at Resht were ordered to advance on Teheran. The Minister of Foreign Affairs has resigned. Three men, firing seven shots, killed Ali Bowlah, ex-Governor of Faro, as he was leaving his residence at Teheran. Ali was suspected of intriguing with Hipahdar, for the ExShah’s return.
