STRIKE AT ONEHUNGA.
DRAINAGE WORKS AT A STANDSTILL. fBT TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, October 9. Aboupt twenty men employed on the tidal portion of the drainage works at Onehunga went on strike on Saturday for an increase of wages. They intimated to the foreman of works that the pay was insufficient as they had to work over their boot tops in mud, and they demanded 2s 6d per hour (instead of Is 6d an hour) which was refused by Mr Cculson, the contractor. When the tide was out and the men were to have started work only three or four, did so. Those who started work were unable to proceed, as they could not lift the hea.vy pipes without the help of the other men. About forty men are employed on the drainage works—twenty at tidal work and the others at trench work in the streets. This morning tire latter refused to turn to until their mates obtained their demands, so that the drainage works at present are at a standstill. Mr Coulson thi s morning paid off thirty men.
