[BY TELEGRAPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] INFANTILE SCALDING FATALITY. CHRISTCHURCH, June 3.—The ten; months’ old female child of Mr. J. MT. Heath died last night from the results of scalding. Yesterday morning, whilst the child was sitting in front _of a fire, it fell off a chair, and in doing so touched the handle-of a pot of boiling water, some of which was spilled on the infant. Mrs Heath, who is stated to be a certificated riurse from a London Hospital, attended to the little sufferer, but its condition becoming worse, medical aid was called in between nine and ten o’clock last night. /■ All efforts to relieve the child were unsuccessful, and it succumbed. At the inquest, the coronor returned a verdict of accidental death from scalding. . The evidence showed that it was owing. to a pin becoming loose in front of chair that the child fell out.
BENEFIT BY SHEFFIELD CHOIR. CHRISTCHURCH, June, 30.—Dr. Harriss, organiser of the Sheffield Choir replying to the, Miayor’s request that the choir should give the proceeds of a matinee performance to the local Coronation Memorial Fund, states that he will give one half of the entire receipts of a Coronation Empire Concert to be given by the choir herb on Wed-* nesday next. MAIN TRUNK EXPRESS DELAYED. WELLINGTON, Juno, 30—The Main Trunk train from Auckland, which met with a slight mishap at Tekawuhata, arrived in Wellington at ten o’clock to-night, just under six hours late, SALVATIONIST AND SOCIALIST FINED. CHRISTCHURCH, June, 30. ' Alfred Thnrkettle, of the Salvation Army, on two charges of breaches of the City Council bye-law prohibiting public speaking or praying in Cathedral Square, was to-day fined 7s and 20s, with costs, in each case. F. R. Cooke, for a similar breach was fined 10s and costs. t Regarding a previous breach . of the bye-law by Cooke who is a Socialist orator, the fine imposed has not been paid, and Cooke was arrested today and imprisoned. BIRTHDAY CONGRATULATIONS. WELLINGTON, June 30. His Excellency the Governor has received the following reply to a message of congratulation forwarded from New Zealand to H.R.H tho Prince of Wales, upon his birthday:—“London, June 28.—Will you thank the Government and people of New Zealand from me, and tell them I hope one day to be able to visit their beautiful country.—Edward P.”
MASTERTON UNDER NO LICENSE. MASTERTON, June, 30. A monster meeting was hold in the Town Hall hero to-night to celebrate tho second anniversary of the carrying of No-License in tho Masterton electorate. Tho organiser of the party, showing that, of ninety tradespeople who had boon approached concerning the effects of no-liconso, only eight hud declared against it. Six medical men gave written testimony that they had not observed drinking in homes to any extent, and figures wore adduced to show that the bankruptcies since nolicenso had been fewer than formerly, while crime had almost entirely disappeared. AUCKLAND AFFAIRS. AUCKLAND, This Day.—The City Council instructed its solicitor to bring an action fo test the question of encroachment by a large number of Queen Street properties, which the Government survey shows to encroach on Queen Street alignment- The City Council decided to invite the Inspector of Police, the District Health Officers and Inspector of Factories to make an inspection of the city with the members of the Works’ Committee, to decide on united action in regard to the report presented by the Council’s Sanitary IJaspectfor regarding the extraordinary insanitary conditions of certain hotels, restaurants, etc.
