THE CHORAL CONTEST.

[TO the editor.] Sir, —Seeing a letter in your valuable paper in reference to the above I would deem it a favour if you would grant me space to reply. The writer states that there was absolute harmony and good-will existing at the recent amalgamated choirs practices, and further the results of the concerts have been to draw the various choir members together. If this is so. surely they could stand the strain of one of the choirs being adjudged better than the other two at the coming competition. The writer of that letter is, I should like to state, the secretary of one of the Greymouth choirs. He states that the choirs will be “stacking” for the competition. I should like to be able to state that his choir is above reproach in that respect, but am afraid I am unable to do so. Moreover, is his choir so particularly anxious to practice nothing but anthems and ordinary routine work? Do they never alter their practice night to enable members to attend a dance? Or do they never finish their practice early for the convenience of church socials, etc? During the present year a successful choir contest was held in Christchurch with four entries and last year with only two, therefore, surely Greymouth with three entries should be able to hold a contest which will, I a.m confident, be a success in every way and, moreover, be a benefit to the choirs and their singers. I am afraid that the writer of that letter will find that he is rather late in his efforts to cancel the competition and the best thing for him to do is to “face the music” now that he has erroneously let the matter go so far. “FRANCIS BACON.” Greymouth, June 29th, 1911. [to the editor.] Sir,—There are none so blind as those who will not see —vide “Lover of Choral Singing” letter. Yours etc., FRANK BASSANO.
