The Government Meteorologist last night issued the following weather summary and forecast The barometer has fallen everywhere, and moderate northerly and easterly winds have prevailed, with increasing cloudiness, and humidity. The present indications are for unsettled and cloudy weather generally, and rain in most parts of the country.' Moderate to strong northerly winds and a falling barometer are probable everywhere. The Rev. D. C. Bates (Government Meteorologist) wired at noon to-day as follows: “Moderate to strong westerly winds, veering to strong to gale, westerly after 15 hours. Very heavy rain may be expected, rivers rising, glass fall, but unsteady ; tides and sea increasing gradually, and expect tides high and sea heavy on” the Coast likely to continue for some days.”

Tlie Gertie is due from foxton on Friday. She will probably return to the same port. The Kairaki will sail on to-morrow morning’s tide for Lvttelton and Kaiapoi with a cargo of timber. The schooner Lily, from Greymouth, reached Lvttelton on Monday last.

The Mapourika is due to-morrow morning. and sails for Wellington at seven o’clock to-morrow cvenimr.

The Kaiapoi is due this evening, and loads coal for Wellington.

The Pctone sails to-morrow night for Lyttelton and Timaru. The Kaitoa sailed last night with a cargo of coal for Picton. She is due back on Saturday and loads sleepers tor Nelson.

The Waimea sailed this afternoon for Westport, Picton and Tauranga. She is expected to leave Tauranga on Tuesday next on return to Greymouth, via ports. The Waverley is due. to-morrow from Wellington, via way ports. The many friends of Mr A. P. Gibson will he pleased to learn of the progress he lias made- in his profession, he having been appointed to tiie command of the s.s. 'Mann. Captain Gibson'was formerly mate of the Jane Douglas. The rent in the hull of the Wairau, which was recently partly submerged in the Mnnawatn River, was a little forward of the engine room, and extended from the deck to-the bilge. It is intended to make temporary repairs at Foxton and then take her’ to Wellington to be thoroughly overhauled. Her machinery has been dismantled, and will be cleaned .before the vessel leaves for Wellington.
