Mr H. D. Roberts returned to town from Dunedin last evening. Mr T. E. Coates has been appointed solicitor to the Greymouth Fire Hoard.
His Lordship Bishop Julius is announced to visit the West Coast at the end of next montn.
Mr. Glasgow, who has been managing the Ross branch of the Bank of New Zealand, which has now beer closed, is proceeding under orders to Wellington. It is understood that , the Acting Prime Minister, the Hon. James Carroll, will shortly pays a visit to the South Island, making a long tour through the constituencies.
A cable to-day states that the Marquis and Marchioness of Linlithgow have arrived at Fremantle, en route to Melbourne, for the purpose of unveiling a monument to the late Lord Hopetoun. Mr R. McCallum, solicitor, Blenheim, will contest the Wairau seat at the forthcoming election, in the interests of the present Government. Mr Dan Love, of Waikawa ,Marlborough,_will ,it is stated, be a candidate for the Southern Maori electorate, at present represented by Mr T. Parata.
Mrs A. C. Cottrell, of Westpoit, on Saturday, received a “wireless” telegraphic message from her mother, Mrs Anderson,, who despatched it from a steamer en route from New Zealand to Sydney. This is the first “wireless” received in Westport-
Mr A. G. Tomkies, Instructor of the engineering classes, Westport Technihal School, who is well known in the Grey district, has added another to his numerous inventions. He has protected an improved fastening for roller blinds, which promises to be a very useful notion. Mr James Taylor, a popular member of the Westport Garrison Band (who is leaving for Eeefton) was entertained by the Band at Westport on Friday night, and presented with a token of esteem in the form of a silver-mounted cigarette case. The presentation was made by Mr Hopkinson, supported bv other members of the band, and suitably acknowledged. The members of the band spent a pleasant time with the departing guest, who takes with him the best wishes of Ins musical comrades and numerous other friends. . , , . . ~ News has been received of the cleatu of an old Greymouth resident in the person of Miss Pauline Lennon, who died on March Bth at McCombs, in Missouri. U.S.A. In the early days the deceased •was well known in Greymouth. having been a music teacher- prior to the opening ot the Convent. She was also organist at St. Patrick’s Church for a considerable period. The only brother of ■deceased was a priest, but he died some veara ago. , Mr V. White-Parsons, who has just re- • tired after representing the Crown Brewerv Company for over thirty years in Christchurch and the West Coast, was presented with a handsome gold watch, suitably inscribed, by the Canterbury commercial travellers on Saturday. Mi Drake, who made the presentation, referred to the high esteem in which Mi White-Parsons was held by his fellowtravellers, and to the feeling of regret at losing' his genial company “on the road.”
