COBDEN SCHOOL.

COMMITTEE'S ANNUAL REPORT.

The following is the outgoing Gom■mitee's report:— r •' "On behalf of the Cobden School. Committee we beg to submit the following report for the year , ending March 31st last. The. number, of meetings held during the year was 13 and the respective attendances were as follows:—W. Williams ■ 13, L. Williams 13, A. Scalmar 9, J. Mead 11, J. Robertson 11, H. Wisdom 9, E. Moore 5, W. Petherbridge 5. IMPROVEMENTS., ' /■ During the year the committee had been very successful in getting general improvements effected in and around the school. The exterior of the school has been painted and the play ground covered' with ashes Avhich has been a great improvement. A RETIREMENT. We very much regret having to report the resignation of Miss Sotheran, who was one of the oldest teachers in the Grey' district. Applications were called by the Board for the rxisition thus rendered vacant and after due consideration Miss Ivy Cornwall was appointed. GOOD WORK DONE. The general work in connection with the school has been of a very high standard and with the additional certified* teacher we. can reasonably expect good results for the present year. Your Committee desire to thank the residents of Cobden for the very liberal support given to the school throughout the year and trust the same support will be given the incoming committee. SCHOLARSHIPS. At the last examination for scholarships Master Horatio Balfour was successful in winning a Board's scholarship, but owing to his removal from the district it was offered to and accepted by Miss Clara Foord. This makes seven scholarships that have been won from the school during the 6£ years that the present headmaster, Mr'de Berry, has been in charge of the school. FINANCIAL. You will observe by the balance sheet presented to-night that the financial position of the school is in a satisfactory condition, despite the fact that a large v amount of money was expended this year than previously on prizes, picnics, etc. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The last annual report submitted by the Inspector is highly satisfactory and the Committee desires to congratulate the teadung staff on the excellent results obtained. ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL. We would like to draw the attention of parents to tin? necessity of sending their children to school regularly. Although the average attendance during the year has been very fair there is still room for considerable improvement. The roll number at the commencement of the year was 214 and ;\t present is 182. The fall in the attendance is due to the fact that another school has been opened in the district."
