MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

THE HOKITIKA MAYORALTY

In spite of a largely-signed requisition which was presented to Mr Michel on Tuesday evening, lie declined nomination for the Mayoralty of Hokitika. Mr Michel pointed out that in view of the general election which he was contesting this year he would frequently he absent from Hokitika and could not spare the time to attend to Hie duties of the Mayoral position. He and a number ol other gentlemen subsequently waitec upon Mr George Perry-and urged thai gentleman as an ex-councillor and prominent citizen should agree to accept nom ination. Air Perry somewhat reluctantly acceeded to the request of the deputation, and was nominated In Alessrs H. L. Alichel and R. Wild. There being no other nominations, Mi Perry was declared elected. Air Penn served for three years on the Hokitika Borough Council and for the past two years has been chairman of the Westland Education Board. He is also an exChairman of the Hokitika Harbor Board and is generally well Qualified for the office

SOUTH CANTERBURY NOMINATIONS. TIMARU, April, 19. The nominations closed to-day foi local borough and other elections. For the Timaru Mayoralty Mr. J. Craigio, M.P., who has been Mayor for the last nine years, and Councillor Beck, a retired farmer, are the candidates. For twelve seats on the Borough Council there are twenty-live nominations, and three of the present Council lors stand out. For the Timaru High School Board there are four candidates for two seats and for the Harbour Board four candidates for three seats. For Waimate Mr. Norton Francis has been re-elected Mayor unopposed There are sixteen candidates for nine seat in the Waimate Council. ' At Temuka, Mr. J. T. M. Hayhurst,. a former Mayor, opposes. Mr. T. Buxton M.P., the present Mayor. At Timaru and Waimate the Labnui Party makes a bid for a share in the representation, six. candidates in eachcase accepting tickets. PAHIATUA NOMINATIONS. PAHIATUA, April, 19. Mr. Y\ r . W. • McArdlc, the present Mayor, and Mr. A. Weston were nominated to-day lor the Mayoralty of Pahiatua. Only the number required wore nominated for the Council, and there will bo no contest.
