This afternoon Mr. George Allport (Secretary for the Marine Department) received a letter from Mr C Webber, a settler at the French Pass in which he said that Messrs Wells Bros., of Durville Island found what they believed to be the carcase of Polorous Jack. Webber who has seen Jack many hundreds of times, was asked it he could identify the remains and as a result the opinion ivas expressed !■* at cue colour, size, and shape exactly correspond with what they had seen of the fish in the water. The length of the carcase is, thev state, just one inch under 14 feet, and the girth between 9 feet and 10 feet. “I should say’,’ says Webber “that he has been dead for a week or ten days, and has been considerably bitten by sharks, probabl'. after death” The Marine Department has sent instructions to take photographs of the fish and to secure the skeleton till the Hinemoa can call for it. I.he Department is also requesting masters of passing vessels to ascertain if Peiorus Jack is frequenting his us .ml haunts The Wellington Post to-night publishes a telegram that a carcase sup posed to be Pelorus Jack, a peciiiia fish which has frequented the Ire mm Pass for -many years has been washed ashore at Admiralty Bay. -The roper* is not confirmed. The Order-in-Counc* , protecting Pelorus Jack expires oi. May 24th.
STIIL ALIVE AND FRISKY. “ JACK ” SEEN ON MONDAY. NELSON, March, 21. The “Colonist’ ’is in the position to contradict the report as to the death or “Pelorus Jack”. Mr. W. T. Bond, of Nelson, who returned home by the iateona to-day, states that ho and others saw Jack in the water on Mondaj night, and that he followed the Pateena for miles. ~ Mr Bond has seen him many times, but never saw him so frisky as he was on Monday night. dvdoot THE PATEENA ft REPORI. WELLINGTON, March, 21. In reference to the report of a dead fish having bqeen found, believed to be Pelorus Jack, it is stated by the officers of the Pateena, which amyed in Wellington to-night, that Peloius Jack was seen on Saturday afternooi as usual. When the 1 ateena was on the passage from Nelson to Picton, and on Monday night the lookout man saw Jack accompanying the vessel fiom2o past 9 till 10 to 10. Pelorus Jack was also seen by some of the passengois. This afternoon Pelorus Jack was pot seen by anyone on the Pateena, but this is not pnusual, as Jack has frequently been absent during the past tew months.
