AUSTRALASIAN RECORD ESTABLISHED. sftiNEY, Th'is Day. Schneider, who represents Australia at the festival of Empire team, yesterday broke several'Australasian records. He covered the quarter of a mile in 26 3-5 unpaced and the half mile in 55 4-5 unpaced and one mile in 2 min. 1 3-5 sees. Three years ago Schneider, the cyclist, was unable to ride. Then he became the amateur wrestling champion. LONDON, February 23. ' The Council of the Festival of the Em T pire has decided to hold the imperial sports, commencing on June 24, open to Australia, Africa, Canada and Britain. The programme will comprise hurdles, running over distances of 220yds, 880yds and a mile, swimming over 100 yards and a mile, .single tennis, niiddle-weight wrestling and heavy-weight boxing.

TARANAKI MEETING. NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 23. The Tarariaki Rifle Association concluded a most successful meeting today in excellent weather. There was remarkably good and consistent shooting throughout. The Stratford match resulted—Private P. Riddles (Taranaki Guards) £2 2, 69 points; Rifleman A. H. Guy (Kaponga) £1 10s, 67; Rifleman Shepherd (Rahitu) £1 6s, 66; Rifleman H. Speck (Stratford) £1 Is, 65; Sergt Cody (Patea Rifles) £l, 65. lii, the Patea match (1000 yards), Col-Sergt. Hartnell (Taranaki Guards) won £2- 2s with a score of 42; Sergt. Hopewell (Eltham Rifles) £1 10s, 42; Rifleman Shepherd (Rahotu) £1 ss, 42; Rifleman Sangster,\ £l, 41; Sergt. Southernm £l, 41. In the Grand Aggregate Sergt Frank (Nelson) takes the champion belt, presented by Private T. King, a gold medal, and £2, with a score of 337 ; Ilifioman Shepherd, silver medal and £1 10s, 336; Pvt. Shortwell (Taranaki Guards) £l, 334 ; Sergt Hopewell (Eltham Rifles) 10s, 331. The teams' match (five men a-side) seven shots at the 200, 500, and 600 yards resulted:—Taranaki Rifles No. 1 Team, 164, 166, 164, total 494, an average of one point under 99 points per man; Taranaki Guards No. 1 Team, 487: Stratford Rifle Club,. 485. Tne Government District match resulted—Corporal Dewar (Tarata R.C; : £2, 69; Rifleman Colmer (Rahotu) £1 10s, 67; Lieut. Willis (Taranaki Rifles) £l, 66; Private Cianchett (Taranaki .A i lies) £l, 66. GREY TEAM FOR TRENTHAM. The team that is to fire for the shield match given by the South Island Rifle Association's meeting at Redcliffs, near Christchurcli, on left by this morning's express for their destination. They comprised Captain Sotheran, Bugler S. Moss, Privates Flaherty and Richardson. Bugler T. Goodall and Private Hogben will "join them at Christchurcli. After he Redcliffs competition the team will proceed to Trentham to compete for the North Island Association's championship cup and £SO, which will be opened at Trentham on Thursday. The members of the team have been putting in some good shooting of late, and there is a jood deal of interest centred here in their success in both competitions. BROMLEY MEMORIAL BELT. The annual competition for the Bromley Memorial Belt was concluded on Wednesday in perfect shooting weather. The competition proved very keen and resulted in a win for Lieut, Cribb, who now holds the belt for twelve months, and also the £2 2s trophy presented by a friend of the late Captain Bromley. Private Richardson's ohoot deserves mention, as he 1 ' almost had the competition won, but for his last shot being unlucky, only getting. a two, whereas a five would have given him the belt. CRICKET. AFRICA v. NEW SOUTH WALES. Received this day at 9.35 a.m. ' SYDNEY, This Day. The weather is fine for the return New South Wales-South Africa cricket match to-day. HORDERN'S BOWLING. ADELAIDE, This Day. Clem Hill, interviewed, was enthusiastic over Hordern's bowling in the fourth test match. Personally he considers him the best "googlie" bowler. His inclusion tremendously strengthened the Australian team, wliich witli him could beat an English team. TEST MATCH RECEIPTS. MELBOURNE, This Day. The total receipts at the fourth test match were £1.677. LONDON. February 23. The recommendation of the Yorkshire County cricket authorities that county matches in 1912 should be confined to two days is exciting attention. Mr A. 0. Jones (the Nott's captain) believes that such an action would increase public interest, but Mr P .F .Warner (the Midlesex captain) emphaticallv opposes the proposal, as he considers it would abolish uphill fighting as part of the game. Mr Leveson Gowe (the Surrey captain) is not averse to trying it as an experiment, and says that they -would have the advantage of discussing it with the Australians, and South Africans while in England. The following will represent Kamaka in their match against Mawhera B on Saturday at the Park:—T. O'Brien, S. Godfrey. A. Williams, P .Mullins, P. GUlin, C. Campbell, A. Stewart, S. CYCLING. TIMAR-U, Feb. 23.—Jn ,3 cycle road race to-day from Timaru to Geraldine and bark, about fifty miles, W. J;. Oklman (Christcliiircli) made the fastest time, viz.—2 hours 17 minutes 4.3 seconds. Fifteen started. The roads wore loose from the dry weather.
