GOVERNMENT’S ARRANGEMENTS [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.]
LONDON, Feb. 21. In the House of Commons at last sitting, Mr Hobhouse, on behalf of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Lloyd George, made “a* statement of importance in relation to finance. He reviewed the financial resolution of the House of Commons in connection with the Budget in relation to the House of Lords. He announced that the Government proposed to pay the whole of* the old age pensions, which, he said, would soon calf for aif annual amount of £12,700,000. It was considered by the Government that a portion of the cost of the pensions should bo borne by the ratepayers, and it was therefore intended to retain half the land taxes lor this purpose. The local authorities would be relieved of the cost of providing for paupers to the extent of two millions a year. The Education authorities would be given a grant of £1,384,000 annually, instead of having to depend upon the fluctuation of the whisky duties as heretofore. Provision would be made to preveht the lessors of lands passing the increment tax on to the lessees. The new license duties would be modified in conformity with the recent legal judgments.
