THE PACIFIC CABLE.
IMPORTANT IMPROVEMENTS
PACIFIC MANAGER INTERVIEW-
[BY XEI.EGkAP«—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
SYDNEY, Jan. 25
Some interesting information regarding improvements to its lino recently effected by the Pacific Cable Board is given by Mr. Milward the Manager for the Board in the Pacific who has just returned from a visit to Canada. Mr. Milward says that the Board now controls line communication from Australia xo Montreal, and has effected an installation which will enable the despatch of cables to be expedited to the extent of twenty-five per cent or, in other words, the Pacific cable is now able to deal with twentyfive per cent more business in a given time than heretofore. , Mr Milward’s mission to Canada was for the purpose of installing apparatus and taking over for the Board the line previously leased from the Canadian Pacific Railway Coy. The Pacific telegraphs can now carry messages over 6,100 miles with only one land line The old system required three hand lines.
Asked if the innovation was likely to lead to a reduction of rates within a reasonable time, Mr. Milward said:— “It places us in a better position in regard to reducing the cost. The present weekly average of business over the Pacific line is forty-two thousand words. This shows a marked and continuous increase. It is conceivable that if hte Board increased the carrying capacity of its cables to a large extent, and the public supplied sufficient business, the rates may be affected.” Referring to the All Red Route Mr Milward declared that obviously it would be an advantage for the Pacific Board to have a cable right through across the Atlantic. The Atlantic cables at the present time were practically controlled by American capitalists.
