WELLINGTON, May 20

Tho Secondary Schools Conference closed last evening. Tho committee, consisting of the president and Messrs Sevan, Brown, Moreland, Dove, Morrell, and Tibbs was appointed to consider the present method of selecting Rhodes’ scholars and obtain inform a-/ tion of the methods adopted elsewhere and report to the next conference. A resolution was-carried affirming tho desirability of domestic science forming a part of every girl’s education.

Resolutions were adopted requesting the Superannuation Board to give a definite ruling regarding past and present teachers at such schools as Christ College, Christchurch and the Wanganui Collegiate School. That the Minister of Education be requested to amend the Act by embodying the principle that pensions be computed on the highest salary re ceived during any three consecutive years instead of the last three years of service.

That the Minister’s attention be, drawn to the anomaly which prevents a teacher in the Service before the passing of the Act from coming under its provisions unless appointed ,to a new position. That Secondary School teachers be allowed to 'retire at an earlier age than after 40 years’ service. That the amount per head available for Education in New Zealand is insufficient to pay adequate salaries for the work done, or to encourage the best teachers to take up secondary education as a career in life..

That this conference' should have a representative member on the University Senate, and the Minister of Education should be approached on the matter. That there is urgent need for an increase in the proportion of teachers to pupils, in Secondary Schools and that the nnipbor of assistants should not be, fewer than one for every 25 pupils. < . ,' : It decided to hold the next conference iii 'Christchurch, the Standing Committee to determine whether it he-, held in *1912 or the following year.
