CHASED RV THE POLICE. HR EAT EXCITEMENT IN THE NORTH. PA I! lAT HA. This Day. A man, believed to be Powelka, was chased by the police hist evening, who tired upon the runaway who escaped. The man evidently saw the constables at the same time am! made off at a gallop. At the end of a two mile chase, the man left his horse and made off through the bush towards the river. The police followed but by this time, it was getting dark. The horse, which belongs to 0. F. Turner ,of Palmerston, was caught by Hie constables and brought into Pabiatua, Powelka was wearing a green slouch hat, dark t weed overcoat and a new pair of long loggings. Pabiatua and surrounding districts have been thrown into a state of excitement. The whole surrounding country is in ii state of ferment and settlers are out with firearms assisting the police. Police from the surrounding districts are closing round.
