[PEK BBESS ASSOCIATION—COPTBIQHT.] FATAL SNAKE-BITE. Received this day at 8.30 a.m. MELBOURNE, This Day.— Two cases of fatal snake bite have occurred in tho country, both victims being young children.
A CHINESE BURGLAR. BRISBANE, March 21.—A Chinese burglar entered the room of Mr Disvier Hughes at the Club Hotel. Hughes attempted to capture the intruder, who drew a knife and inflicted a slight wound on Mr Hughes. The Chinaman escaped from the room and in getting out was observed by a constable. The dead body of the Chinaman was fouud at daylight in the bush, two shots having taken effect. PECULIAR MANSLAUGHTER CASE. SYDNEY, March 22.—Tho trial of Dr Carlo Fiaschi and Nurse Young on a charge of manslaughter of a girl nained Nightingale at Lithgow on January 10th last, opened yesterday. A doctor who had previously stated that there was no indication of an operation for hemorrhoids, and that . an important organ was missing, gave evidence to the effect that tho supposed missing organ was to-day found in the presence of a number of medical experts, attached to another organ, and that the body bore indications of an operation for hemorrhoids. Under the circumstances, he thercfoie reversed lis previous evidence, which arose through tho abnormal conditions of the organs. FLOODS IN QUEENSLAND.
BRISBANE, March 22.—The Fiteroy river at Rockhampton is in high flood. Sixteen inches of rain lias fallen during the present month. The low lying parts of the town are inundated. 'Die residents are removing
from their houses. The wharves are covered with much-damaged goods. Tho floods caused great destruction in
the surrounding districts. Several mining dams were swept away, and the train service is disorganised. The waters are still rising. 'the township is largely under water at .McKay. Over a hundred inches of rain lias fallen since the beginning of the year tit Port Darwin. Later.—Numbers are being rescued by boats. At Charlcville three men attempted to cross the river in a beat but lost the boat and now cling to a tree top in a perilous position. A man named Munn was drowned at Bajool.
THE FITZROY EXPLOSION. Received this dav at. 10.10 a.m. MELBOURNE, This Day.-- The noise uf til'' f/itzroy explosion was hoard .several miles away. A column of van-coloured flame shot into the air estimated at 500 feet m height. Iron verandah pillars were twisted and thrown across the street while debris of all descriptions was thrown on roofs of adjoining premises. Two little hoys in the same room from which a girl was precipitated, had a perilous experience. Portion of the floor on which a bed stood remained attached in the walls. Lads awakened and found themselves on the edge of the precipice. Flames enabled them to creep into a place uf safety. AERIAL NAVIGATION. MELBOURNE, This Day.— IDuilini had another flight and covered six miles in 7 minutes 37 seconds.
