NORTH ISLAND BAND CONTEST

[BY TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. WANGANUI, March 17. The Hand contest was continued today. The weather was gloriously fine and the Quickstep Competition took place in the presence of a record crowd. Tin; gate takings amounted to £350. Twelve bands competed. The Wanganui Garrison carried off first prize with a total of 285 points. Of these 130 were for music. Blenheim was second with 283 points, 122 being for music. Petone came third with 265 points, 126 being for music. Others finished as follows:—Nelson 261 J-, Wanganui Citv 253. Manai.i 247;,\ Gisborne Cambridge 243, Wellington Tramways 233.',, VVaitara 232.!, Feilding 223£, Opunake 217. During the afternoon Mr Janus A. Crichton was presented with a gold medal to commemorate the fact that he was conductor of the finest, performance by any massed band in New Zealand, viz.. that at a garden party on Tuesday last. Mr Maurice Cohen was presented with a handsome oil painting on the occasion of his resigning the Presidency of the North Islam! Brass Band Association after holding office for 12 years. This eyening the quartette competition took place. There were only four competitors. The following are the results:—Nelson 132, Wanganui (Xo. 1) 129, Wanganui (No. 2) 121, Gisborne 107. The judge said the winning quartette was the best ho had ever heard. The annual meeting of the North Island Brass Band Association was held this evening, 50 delegates being present. 31 r Louis Cohen was elected President", and Messrs Holben and Charker were re-elected secretary and treasurer. The disqualification A five Wellington players (who applied for a removal of same) was granted. It was decided to make no change in the grading system. The next contest is to be held in Palmerston North, Gisborno's claims for t}iQ 1912 contest to be favourably considered.
